The patronal feast of the village of murals, in the heart of Cilento
The Sant'Elia Festival is the most iconic event in Piano Vetrale, a hamlet of the Municipality of Orria, in the province of Salerno, Campania. Every year, on July 20th, the community gathers around the Church of Saint Elijah the Prophet for the patronal feast: a religious and social ritual that brings together residents, emigrants returning for the summer, and visitors to the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park.
The village sits at an altitude of about 575 meters on a ridge overlooking the upper Alento valley. Piano and Vetrale were originally two distinct settlements, dependent on the parishes of Santa Sofia and Sant'Elia respectively; the merger of the two did not erase the two titles, which coexist today in the name of the Santa Sofia and Sant'Elia parish. It is from this dual root that the local festive calendar was born, with Sant'Elia in July and Santa Sofia at the end of September.
The cult of the prophet Elijah is among the oldest and most widespread in Southern Italy. In Cilento, besides Piano Vetrale, the saint is also the patron of other communities such as Postiglione and Buonabitacolo. Popular tradition invokes him as the protector against fire and drought, in memory of the biblical accounts where he calls fire down from heaven on Mount Carmel and is eventually taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire.
In an agricultural territory like the Alento valley, this dimension was far from symbolic: the inhabitants turned to Saint Elijah during periods of drought, but also to ward off earthquakes, epidemics, and wars. The prayer for beneficial rain and for the protection of fields and homes remains the common thread of the celebrations to this day.
Two traditions tell the story of the Piano Vetrale festival better than anything else.
The celebrations are preceded by the novena, nine days of prayer that mark the approach to the feast, and by the evening of the eve dedicated to solemn vespers. On July 20th, the patronal feast is celebrated with a solemn mass and the characteristic procession that winds through the village, with great popular participation. Alongside the liturgical moments, the secular side of the festival unfolds, featuring music, illuminations, and conviviality in the village squares.
Piano Vetrale is known throughout Campania as the “village of murals”: since the late 1970s, house facades have been decorated with large wall paintings, transforming the historic center into an open-air museum. The village is also linked to the Baroque painter Paolo de Matteis (1662-1728), after whom the local Pro Loco is named, which is very active in the village's summer entertainment.
Those who arrive for the patronal feast find much more than just a procession: a journey through street art, rural Cilento architecture, and panoramas of the National Park's hinterland, just a short distance from the Cilento beaches.
On July 20, 2026, Piano Vetrale renewed its appointment with Saint Elijah the Prophet, the patron saint of the village. The local Cilento press recalled the anniversary on the eve, highlighting the value of a cult that also involves other communities in the area and which here is expressed in the procession along the alleys adorned with murals.
The day was part of a particularly rich summer for the village: in the same month of July 2026, the village hosted the second edition of the Park Theater Festival (July 11-18) and opened the summer program curated by the “Paolo De Matteis” Pro Loco, with literary, musical, and sporting events from late July to late August.
Alongside the liturgical moments, the memory of the “ffocare” remains alive—the large fires that were once lit on the ridge of the hill behind the village—as well as the “cinto” ritual, practiced during periods of drought to invoke rain. These elements make the Piano Vetrale festival one of the most interesting testimonies of the popular traditions of inland Cilento.
