The Ferragosto pilgrimage to the mountain sanctuary of Piaggine, in the heart of the Cilento region
The Madonna del Monte Vivo Festival is the most cherished event of the summer in Piaggine, a town in the Province of Salerno nestled in the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, in Campania. Every year, around August 15th, the community leaves the village and climbs toward the Marian sanctuary located on Monte Vivo, at an altitude of about 1,200 meters, for a day that weaves together liturgy, hiking, and conviviality.
This is not a tourist-oriented event: it is a grassroots festival, passed down from generation to generation, where the religious rite of the Assumption blends with the ancient bond that the people of Piaggine have with their mountain.
The chapel of the Madonna del Monte Vivo is immersed in beech forests and trails, in a panoramic position that, on clear days, offers views over the inner Cilento mountains. The site is accessible both by a mountain road and along the ancient pilgrim's path, which has recently undergone restoration funded by the Municipality of Piaggine and the Campania Region: stone paving of the historic trail, improved access, paths designed for people with reduced mobility, and new visitor services.
Around the sanctuary, there is a picnic area with a refreshment point: this is where, on the day of the festival, families spread out their tablecloths, and the devotional day naturally turns into a shared celebration.
The religious heart of the event is the pilgrimage to Monte Vivo, which leads the faithful along the mountain paths to the chapel, crossing the scenic Tempa Maggiore stretch. The occasion coincides with the solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, celebrated on August 15th: the ascent, the Eucharistic celebrations, and moments of prayer mark the morning, while the afternoon opens up to a more social dimension.
On the evening of August 15th, the festivities move down to the valley, to Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the heart of Piaggine, where folk music brings the day to a close. In 2026, the stage will host O Vico โ Folk Contemporaneo, a band that reinterprets the traditional musical repertoire of the South in a contemporary style. It is the moment when the religious festival becomes a community celebration: emigrants and vacationers return to the village specifically for Ferragosto, and the square fills up until late at night.
Piaggine is one of the highest villages in the inner Cilento, founded around a ford of the Calore river and an ancient Benedictine settlement, at the foot of Monte Cervati (1,899 meters), the highest peak in Campania. The municipal territory is a mosaic of beech forests, springs, and trails: the Calore waterfalls, the Pianelle and Cervatello woods, and the routes that continue from Monte Vivo toward Monte Motola. Those who arrive for the festival find much more than a religious event: they find a piece of the Southern Apennines that is still off the beaten path, where silence speaks volumes.
The Madonna del Monte Vivo Festival is part of a particularly dense summer calendar, created by the Municipality of Piaggine together with local associations and brotherhoods. Between July and August, the calendar includes the Feast of the Madonna del Carmine, the celebrations of the Madonna della Neve on Monte Cervati, days dedicated to children, book presentations, concerts, and the Porcini Mushroom Festival, which brings the territory's signature product to the table at the end of August. The cycle of festivals concludes with Santa Filomena in the second half of the month.
Climbing to Monte Vivo on August 15th means experiencing Ferragosto in a way that is the opposite of the crowded beaches of the Cilento coast: fresh air, the shade of beech trees, wide panoramas, and a community that gladly shares its traditions with visitors. Participation is free, and the day is perfect for pilgrims, hikers, or families looking for a mountain excursion with an extra touch of meaning.
The Municipality of Piaggine has included the Madonna del Monte Vivo Festival in the 2026 summer program, confirming the traditional dates of August 14th and 15th. The heart of the event is the ascent to the sanctuary on Monte Vivo, where the pilgrimage, religious services, and the long convivial break in the picnic area among the beech trees are concentrated on the day of the Assumption.
On the evening of Saturday, August 15th, the center of gravity shifts to Piazza Vittorio Veneto, where a concert by O Vico โ Folk Contemporaneo is scheduled, a group that reinterprets Southern folk music in a contemporary style. It is the most attended moment of the Piaggine summer, when the village fills up with those returning for the holidays.
The festival is placed in the middle of a very busy August: the days immediately following bring a rock concert, a literary presentation, days dedicated to children, and, from August 19th to 21st, the seventh edition of the Porcini Mushroom Festival at Rampa Cappuccini. Those who arrive in Piaggine for Ferragosto will find an entire calendar at their disposal.
Opening of the festivities in honor of the Madonna del Monte Vivo, with the devotional moments of the eve.
The exact times of the services and the ascent to the sanctuary will be announced by the Municipality of Piaggine and the parish in the days immediately preceding the festival.
The celebrations are held at the sanctuary of the Madonna del Monte Vivo, on the mountain of the same name at an altitude of about 1,200 meters, in the territory of the Municipality of Piaggine (ZIP 84065), Province of Salerno. The evening festival takes place in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, in the center of the village.
Participation is free for all moments of the festival. Only purchases at the Monte Vivo refreshment point and the village stalls are paid.
