About Madonna della Neve on Monte Cervati

At the beginning of August, the summit of Monte Cervati—the highest mountain in Campania at 1,898 meters—becomes the heart of an ancient devotion. The Madonna della Neve Celebrations draw hundreds of pilgrims to Piaggine, in the Cilento National Park, who hike up to the summit chapel and the cave where the Virgin is embedded in the rock. Two days of masses, nocturnal processions, and hymns amidst the beech forests and the sky, in a tradition shared with the nearby town of Sanza.

A devotion suspended at nearly 1,900 meters

The Madonna della Neve Celebrations on Monte Cervati are the most iconic event of the summer in Piaggine, a village in the province of Salerno, Campania, nestled at an altitude of 630 meters in the upper Cilento region. Every year, in early August, the summit of Monte Cervati—the highest mountain in the region at 1,898 meters—is filled with pilgrims who hike up the trails winding through the beech forests of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. It is neither a food festival nor a show: it is a community ritual that has been renewed for centuries and falls on August 4th and 5th in 2026.

The cave and the summit chapel

The heart of the cult is the Grotta della Madonna della Neve, which opens within the territory of Piaggine just below the summit plateau. Inside, a statue of the Virgin is literally embedded in the rock; it is accessed through a narrow passage, almost with difficulty, and local tradition holds that the image cannot be removed from its place. Not far away, on the summit plateau, stands the chapel where masses are celebrated and the faithful gather. The site was elevated to a diocesan sanctuary in 1988 by the Diocese of Teggiano-Policastro.

A shared devotion between Piaggine and Sanza

The mountain has two names depending on the side: Monte Cervati for the people of Piaggine, and Monte Cervato for the people of Sanza. The devotion, however, is one. From the Sanza side, eight marunnari carry a 16th-century wooden statue on their shoulders along an ancient path of about twelve kilometers: the ascent takes place at the end of July, while the return to the village occurs during the night between August 4th and 5th, when the Virgin descends back to the valley before dawn. The people of Piaggine, together with the inhabitants of Monte San Giacomo, Sassano, and the Vallo di Diano, ascend from the northern side, passing through the Festola spring area and the historic paths that lead to the cave.

The experience on the mountain

Those who reach the summit on the afternoon of August 4th find an unusually inhabited mountain: family groups camped on the grassy plateaus, fires, shared meals, and a constant stream of people heading to the cave entrance to pray and leave ex-votos. Celebrations are concentrated between the chapel plateau and the cave, with evening religious services and a long vigil that accompanies the night. At dawn on August 5th, the day the Church commemorates the dedication of Saint Mary Major, the festival dissolves into a procession. It is estimated that about ninety percent of those present are inhabitants of Piaggine and Sanza: many are emigrants who have returned specifically from Northern Italy or abroad, and it is common to see three generations of the same family climbing together.

Piaggine, gateway to the Cervati

The village was founded around a medieval ford and a Benedictine monastery dedicated to Saint Simeon; a tower of uncertain age, the Castelluccio, once guarded the valley and the passage toward Monte San Giacomo and the Vallo di Diano. In the historic center, made of stone and steep alleys, one can visit the church of San Nicola—the patron saint, celebrated on December 6th—and the church of the Madonna del Carmine, which houses a 17th-century polyptych by Pietrafesa featuring the Immaculate Conception and Franciscan saints. The Calore Lucano river originates from the Cervati, descending toward the village through gorges and clear pools: a natural setting that makes Piaggine one of the best bases for hiking in the upper Cilento.

The Piaggine summer around the festival

The Madonna della Neve celebrations are part of a busy summer calendar, organized by the Municipality together with local associations. Other 2026 events include:

  • July 15-16 — Madonna del Carmelo Celebrations
  • July 29 - August 22 — 45th edition of the Coppa Cervati
  • August 14-15 — Madonna del Monte Vivo Celebrations
  • August 19-21 — 7th Porcini Mushroom Festival
  • August 22-23 — Santa Filomena Celebrations

Those who climb to the Cervati during the festival days can easily plan a longer stay, alternating between the mountains, the river, and the flavors of the Cilento hinterland.

Madonna della Neve on Monte Cervati — edition 2026

The Municipality of Piaggine has confirmed the solemn celebrations dedicated to the Madonna della Neve on Monte Cervati for August 4th and 5th, 2026. Two days of devotion at high altitude, between the summit chapel and the cave housing the image of the Virgin embedded in the rock, with the traditional descent of the statue during the night between August 4th and 5th. The event kicks off the heart of the Piaggine summer calendar.

The 2026 edition

The summer events program released by the Municipality of Piaggine places the solemn Madonna della Neve celebrations on Monte Cervati on August 4th and 5th, 2026. As every year, the festival takes place at high altitude, between the esplanade of the summit chapel and the Grotta della Madonna della Neve, which opens within the territory of Piaggine.

August 4th is the day of anticipation: pilgrims ascend in the afternoon from the various slopes, stop at the cave, and gather around the chapel for evening services. During the night between August 4th and 5th, the most intense moment of the ritual shared with the community of Sanza takes place, with the 16th-century wooden statue carried back down to the valley on the shoulders of the marunnari along the ancient twelve-kilometer path. August 5th, the memorial of the dedication of Saint Mary Major, concludes the celebration.

During the same period, Piaggine hosts other events: on August 4th, the presentation of a book edited by Tino Iannuzzi and Alberto Losacco is scheduled, while the 45th edition of the Coppa Cervati takes place from July 29th to August 22nd.

How to get there

Piaggine is located in the upper Cilento, in the province of Salerno, and is easily reached only by car by driving up the Calore valley; the reference railway stations are those on the Tyrrhenian line (Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo and Sapri), from which you must continue by road.

Climbing to the summit

From the village, the ascent to the Cervati follows the Sentiero Cervati, which coincides with a stage of the CAI's Sentiero Italia. Alternatively, you can reach the Rifugio Cervati by car along the mountain road (a vehicle suitable for dirt roads is required) and continue on foot along the historic path to the summit plateau, the chapel, and the cave.

Tips

  • Trekking boots, water, and a windbreaker: at high altitude, even in August, the night is cold and the weather changes quickly.
  • Start well before sunset if you intend to attend the evening services.
  • The cave is accessed through a very narrow passage: exercise caution with children and those with limited mobility.
  • You are on a mountain within a National Park: no litter should be left behind, and no fires are allowed outside designated areas.

Costs

Free participation, no tickets required.
