About San Vittoriano

The San Vittoriano Patronal Feast is the most cherished celebration in the Canneto district of Adelfia, near Bari. During the last week of July, the neighborhood honors its martyr saint with a solemn procession, artistic light displays, brass band concerts, fireworks, and a delicious fish festival. It is a vibrant fusion of religious devotion and Apulian folk tradition that brings together the entire local community and visitors alike.

The Canneto district festival

The San Vittoriano Patronal Feast is the most highly anticipated event of the year for the Canneto district of Adelfia, a town in the metropolitan city of Bari, Apulia. Every summer, around the last Sunday of July, the neighborhood streets come alive with worshippers, lights, and music to honor the martyr saint revered as the community's protector. It is a celebration that bridges the sacred and the secular, prayer and popular joy, in a collective rite passed down through generations.

Saint Vittoriano the Martyr, patron of Canneto

According to tradition, San Vittoriano was born around 440 AD in Hadrumetum, in Roman Africa, and served as the proconsul of Carthage. Remaining steadfast in his Christian faith during the Vandal persecutions, he was imprisoned, tortured, and eventually martyred. His relics arrived in Canneto in 1753, after being discovered in a Roman catacomb and kept in Naples; since then, the saint has become a symbol of faith and identity for the entire district. His remains are preserved in the Mother Church of Canneto, a Baroque-style building constructed in the second half of the 18th century, which serves as the spiritual heart of the celebrations.

The procession and religious rites

The highlight is the procession featuring the statue of the saint, which winds through the district streets, led by caparisoned horses and accompanied by a brass band and the faithful. The main day begins with a solemn mass in the Mother Church, followed by the long devotional parade. The festival extends beyond a single day: in the evenings leading up to the main event, the neighborhood buzzes with anticipation, with the band marching through the streets and the community preparing for the festivities.

Lights, bands, and fireworks

True to the tradition of Apulian patronal feasts, the district dresses up with famous artistic luminarie (light displays)โ€”architectural structures of light that transform squares and streets into suspended stage sets. The casse armoniche (bandstands) host brass band concerts and musical performances, while spectacular fireworks bring the evenings to a close. Among the most beloved events is "La notte d'u tammurr," featuring drum rhythms and traditional folk dances that animate the town center until late at night.

The fish festival and the flavors of Apulia

The festival is also a gastronomic highlight: the fish festival stalls offer mixed fried fish, mussels au gratin, fish meatballs, and pasta dishes like orecchiette with clams, all paired with local wine. In Piazza Roma, the tradition of sharing focaccia is renewed, serving as a symbol of conviviality and neighborhood belonging.

In Adelfia, between the town's two souls

Adelfia was founded in 1927 from the merger of the two towns of Canneto and Montrone. Each district preserves its own devotion: San Vittoriano is the patron of Canneto, while Montrone venerates Maria SS. della Stella. The San Vittoriano Patronal Feast thus represents not only a moment of faith but also a piece of the plural identity of this town in the Bari area, capable of attracting visitors from neighboring towns and the entire province of Bari every year.
