About San Vitaliano in Sparanise

Every year, during the last week of August, Sparanise gathers to celebrate its patron saint, San Vitaliano, Bishop of Capua, in a festival rooted in over a millennium of local tradition. Solemn masses, novenas, and the procession of the statue through the town center are complemented by concerts in the square, festive illuminations, market stalls, and a grand firework display that concludes the celebrations. It is the most anticipated identity-defining event for this town in the Caserta province, drawing back many residents who have moved away.

A devotion spanning over a thousand years

The San Vitaliano Patronal Feast is the most cherished event of the year in Sparanise, a town in the province of Caserta, in the heart of the Terra di Lavoro region, Campania. Every summer, during the last week of August, the town pauses to honor its patron saint with a blend of religious rites, music, and popular festivities that local chronicles describe as a millennial tradition. This is not a tourist-oriented event; it is a community celebration that marks the year and brings home those who have left Sparanise.

Who was San Vitaliano, the Bishop of Capua

San Vitaliano served as Bishop of Capua for twenty-five years, from 693 to 718. His story, passed down through an ancient Lombard-era manuscript and still recounted in local homes, has legendary traits. Already seventy years old, the bishop was allegedly the victim of a plot by his adversaries, who forced him to wear women's clothing to expose him to public ridicule. Unjustly accused, he was placed in a sack and thrown into the Volturno River; however, the wind reportedly pushed him all the way to Rome, where he was rescued. Capua, struck shortly after by drought and plague, had to call him back. It is from this memory of suffered injustice and redemption that the tenacious affection of the people of Sparanise for their protector stems.

The religious program

The heart of the festival remains liturgical and spans several days, with the parish church of San Vitaliano as its center of gravity. The calendar traditionally includes:

  • the novena of preparation, with morning and evening celebrations in the days leading up to the feast;
  • the Holy Masses on the solemn day, scheduled from early morning until late afternoon;
  • the Solemn Mass attended by religious and civil authorities, sometimes presided over by the diocesan bishop;
  • the procession of the saint's statue through the town streets, accompanied by a brass band, confraternities, and a long parade of the faithful;
  • moments of reflection, meetings, and initiatives promoted by the parish and local missionary groups.

The passing of the statue is the moment when the town truly comes together: decorated balconies, applause as the saint passes, and stops in front of the homes of the sick and the chapel of San Vitaliano along Via San Vito.

The civil festival: illuminations, music, and stalls

Alongside the liturgical program, a rich civil calendar is designed for all ages. The streets of the center are adorned with illuminations, while the squares host concerts and shows: in the past, Piazza Giovanni XXIII has welcomed well-known names in Italian pop music. There is no shortage of theatrical and artistic performances, stands with local gastronomic specialties, craft stalls, sweets, games, rides, and entertainment for children. This is the part of the festival that transforms Sparanise into a long open-air market, with families strolling until late at night.

The fireworks, the grand finale

The closing is always reserved for the firework display, as highly anticipated as the procession. The municipality designates a specific area for the occasion: in municipal notices, the fireworks are indicated in Via Mazzeo. Sparanise has a true tradition in this field, and its pyrotechnic evenings are followed by enthusiasts who document festivals in Campania: recent editions have featured historic firms active between the Naples and Caserta areas, such as Luigi Di Matteo from Sant'Antimo and the Siciliano family from Pignataro Maggiore.

When it takes place

The patronal feast of Sparanise falls on the last Sunday of August, with celebrations spread over the final week of the month; the traditional local recurrence of the saint is linked to August 27th. Note: some event portals report dates in mid-July, which correspond to the liturgical memory of San Vitaliano in the Church calendar and not to the Sparanise festival calendar. For exact dates, it is always best to check the notices of the Municipality of Sparanise and the parish channels.

Sparanise, gateway to the Terra di Lavoro

Sparanise is an agricultural center on the upper Caserta plain, historically a railway hub on the Naples-Cassino line and overlooking the Via Casilina. Around the town stretches the countryside of the Terra di Lavoro, a land of vegetables, wine, and mozzarella, just a few kilometers from Capua, Teano, and the Volturno River. Those who arrive for the festival will find a great excuse to explore an inland Campania rarely visited by tourist circuits.

The 2026 edition of the San Vitaliano Patronal Feast in Sparanise, in the province of Caserta, has not yet been officially announced. The local devotional calendar places the patron saint's solemnity on the last Sunday of August, with festivities spread over the preceding days: it is therefore reasonable to expect a program organized over the last week of the month again this year.

As per tradition, the religious part should include the novena, solemn Masses in the parish church, and the procession of the saint's statue through the town streets, with a brass band and confraternities; the civil part usually includes illuminations, performances in the square, market stalls, and the concluding firework display.
