The patronal feast of Ferragosto in Cancello ed Arnone
Every year, in the heart of summer, the town of Cancello ed Arnone, in the province of Caserta, celebrates its most cherished event: the Feast in honor of Maria SS. Assunta in Cielo, the community's patron saint. The recurrence coincides with Ferragosto and transforms the town center, overlooking the lower course of the Volturno river, into a grand space of devotion and popular celebration that draws both residents and emigrants returning for the occasion.
The feast is rooted in the deep Marian devotion of the parish dedicated to Maria SS. Assunta in Cielo. Festivities begin in the days leading up to the main event with the exhibition of the statue and the preparatory triduum, culminating between August 14th and 16th with solemn masses, hymns to the Virgin, and moments of prayer that involve the entire community. It is a tradition that weaves the liturgical calendar of the Assumption with the town's identity, renewed from generation to generation.
The most emotional moment is the procession of the statue of the Assumption through the streets of the town. The solemn exit, known as "La Sciuta Arnonese," features the simulacrum carried on the shoulders of young bearers and accompanied by religious, civil, and military authorities, amidst the moving participation of the faithful. The streets are adorned with illuminations, and a brass band accompanies the days with marches and pieces from the Campanian band tradition.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festivities offer a rich civil program. The evenings come alive with concerts in the squareโin 2025, the protagonist was the Neapolitan singer-songwriter Gigi Finizioโlive music, and the unmissable fireworks displays that, at midnight, illuminate the sky of the Basso Volturno. There is no shortage of food areas featuring specialties from the Caserta region, from pizza to porchetta, making the feast an appointment for the whole family.
The Feast in honor of Maria SS. Assunta in Cielo represents the main summer event of Cancello ed Arnone and one of the strongest identity moments for this corner of Campania, at the mouth of the Volturno. Between the sacred and the profane, the feast unites devotion to the Assumption with the warmth of popular tradition, offering residents and visitors days of sharing, music, and spirituality in the height of summer.
The 2026 edition of the Feast in honor of Maria SS. Assunta in Cielo will be held, as every year, around Ferragosto, with the peak between August 14th and 16th. The religious and civil program will be defined by the parish and the festival committee in the preceding weeks.
