The patronal feast of Grazzanise, blending faith, tradition, and community
In the heart of the Caserta province, in Campania, the town of Grazzanise celebrates the Patronal Feast of Saint John the Baptist every year on August 29th. It is the most cherished event of the year for the local community, a time when faith, memory, and collective identity intertwine in the streets of the town and around the Mother Church.
Saint John the Baptist is, along with the Virgin Mary, the only saint whose birth (June 24th) and martyrdom (August 29th) are both celebrated by the Church. Grazzanise is one of the few Italian locations that chooses the date of the Precursor's martyrdom as its patronal feast. The reason lies in the ancient agricultural and pastoral roots of the area: by the end of August, field work was completed and emigrants scattered across the world would return home, gathering around the figure of the saint.
The most solemn moment is the procession: the 18th-century statue of Saint John the Baptist, kept inside the Mother Church (the "chiesa 'ranne", part of the Archdiocese of Capua), is brought out in the late afternoon and carried through the streets of the center by the accollatori, the volunteer bearers. The pageant, accompanied by confraternities, a brass band, and hundreds of faithful, winds through the town amidst collective prayers, blessings, and floral tributes.
Alongside religious rites, the Festivities Committee organizes a rich civil program that enlivens Grazzanise throughout the day:
The Patronal Feast of Saint John the Baptist is much more than a religious event: it is the day when Grazzanise rediscovers itself, its rural history, and the bonds between those who stayed and those who returned for the occasion. An authentic experience of folklore and popular traditions in the Terra di Lavoro, far from major tourist circuits and close to the truest soul of inland Campania.
On Saturday, August 29, 2026, Grazzanise celebrates its patron saint, Saint John the Baptist. As per tradition, the day begins with liturgical celebrations in the Mother Church and continues with the procession of the 18th-century statue of the Baptist, carried on the shoulders of the 'accollatori' through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the brass band and confraternities.
In the evening, the town center comes alive with concerts and musical shows, folkloric performances, food stalls featuring typical Campanian dishes, and craft markets. The feast concludes with the traditional fireworks display. The detailed program with times and artists will be released in the weeks leading up to the event by the Parish and the Festivities Committee.
Grazzanise is located in the province of Caserta, in the Basso Volturno plain. By car, it can be reached from the Capua exit (A1 motorway), continuing along the provincial roads towards Basso Volturno. The reference railway stations are Capua or Santa Maria Capua Vetere, which are connected to Caserta and Naples.
The feast is celebrated on August 29th, the day of the martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist. Solemn masses and the procession take place at the Mother Church and in the historic center.
Participation in religious rites, square performances, and the fireworks display is free and open to all.
