The August festival in Mercato San Severino, featuring a triduum, solemn procession, and fireworks
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the height of summer, Mercato San Severino — a town in the Irno Valley, in the province of Salerno, Campania — dedicates several days to San Vincenzo Ferreri, the Dominican preacher whose devotion is deeply rooted in the local community. The festival is more than just a religious event: it is a time when the town fills with illuminations, market stalls, and music, and when the local families gather along Corso Diaz and in the town's squares.
Spiritual preparation takes place in the church of San Giovanni in Parco, where the saint's relic is displayed for three consecutive evenings. The rhythm follows the tradition of Campanian festivals: the Holy Rosary in the late afternoon, followed by evening Eucharistic concelebration, led by local priests and members of the Order of Preachers, the Dominican family to which San Vincenzo Ferreri belonged. A photographic and educational exhibition dedicated to the saint is also hosted in the side chapel.
The main day is Sunday: Holy Masses are held from early morning until noon, while in the evening, the statue of the saint is carried through the streets in a solemn procession, accompanied by the clergy, confraternities, and a long cortege of the faithful. The route winds through the main streets of the centre and typically concludes in Piazza Ettore Imperio, where the final blessing is imparted. It is the most attended moment of the entire festival, where the community truly comes together.
The secular programme naturally complements the religious one. From the early hours of the morning, a brass band parades through the town; later, musical ensembles — such as the Città di Mercato San Severino and Città di Bracigliano bands — perform along Corso Diaz. The evenings feature Neapolitan and folk music concerts in the square, while the grand finale is marked by a fireworks display that lights up the sky over the town.
As with every festival in the Salerno area, food plays its part: stalls selling nougat and sweets, kiosks with sandwiches and fried snacks, and toys for children create an evening promenade that lasts late into the night. It is a deeply popular, free, open-air festival where devotion and conviviality support one another.
The event is organised by the San Vincenzo Ferreri Festival Committee in collaboration with the parish of San Giovanni in Parco and with the support of the Mercato San Severino municipal administration. The committee coordinates both the liturgical calendar and the secular events, sharing the programme through their social media channels and posters displayed around town.
The event traditionally falls in the first half of August, on a weekend that in recent years has fluctuated between the very beginning of the month and the following weekend: in 2024, the festivities took place from 1 to 4 August, and in 2025 from 9 to 11 August. Dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced; it is advisable to follow the committee's and the Municipality's channels for confirmation.
Those visiting Campania in August will find an authentic festival in Mercato San Severino, far from the beaten tourist tracks: no tickets, no fanfare, just an entire community taking to the streets. Between the historic village, the Norman castle overlooking the town, and the hills of the Irno Valley, it is also a great opportunity to discover a lesser-known corner of the province of Salerno.
At the moment, no official programme has been published for the 2026 San Vincenzo Ferreri Festival in Mercato San Severino. Available information refers to previous editions, which place the festivities in the first half of August: from 1 to 4 August in 2024 and from 9 to 11 August in 2025.
If the calendar follows the format of recent years, the festival will include a preparatory triduum in the church of San Giovanni in Parco, with the display of the saint's relic, Holy Rosary in the late afternoon, and evening Eucharistic concelebration. On the main day, Sunday, Holy Masses will be held in the morning, and in the evening, the solemn procession will take place, concluding with a blessing in Piazza Ettore Imperio.
On the secular side, the usual brass band matinée through the town streets, evening concerts in the square, market stalls along Corso Diaz, and the final fireworks display are expected. Names, times, and dates remain to be confirmed: the programme is usually released a few days before the start via posters and social media channels.
Mercato San Severino is easily reached by car from the motorway network connecting Salerno, Nocera, and the Avellino area; the town centre is about twenty kilometres from Salerno. By train, the Mercato San Severino station is served by regional connections to and from Salerno and Avellino, and is located a short distance from the centre.
All events — celebrations, the procession, brass band concerts, and the fireworks display — take place in the church, in the square, and along the town streets: admission is free. Only purchases at stalls and kiosks are paid.
During the procession and fireworks, the centre is closed to traffic: it is best to arrive early and park in the peripheral areas. August evenings can be hot and humid: wear light clothing, bring water, and wear comfortable shoes. Appropriate attire is requested for those entering the church during celebrations.
