In the heart of the Valle d'Itria, perched atop a hill with its characteristic circular historic center and houses with "cummersa" roofs, the town of Locorotondo in the province of Bari (Puglia) celebrates its most cherished event every year: the San Rocco Patronal Festival. Known as "the pilgrim's festival, the festival for everyone," it has been held continuously since 1787 and is today one of the oldest and most popular events in the entire region.
San Rocco, the pilgrim healer invoked against epidemics, is the patron and protector of Locorotondo. The solemn day is August 16th, when the morning bells and the "Diana" of the bands announce the festival at dawn. Devotion is expressed through celebrations in the Mother Church and the Church of San Rocco, culminating in processions that wind through the alleys of the historic center with the saint's statue, accompanied by musical ensembles and civil, military, and religious authorities.
The festival has always intertwined religious and secular moments. The festivities traditionally span from August 6th to 17th, featuring a nine-day preparation period, the solemnity of the Assumption on the 15th, and the patronal day on the 16th. The village is transformed by impressive luminarie (light displays) that create arches of light over the streets, Apulian marching bands performing in the bandstand, concerts in the main squares, and the San Rocco White Night, with street bands and performers animating the center until late at night.
The highlight is undoubtedly the Valle d'Itria Pyrotechnic Festival, a historic fireworks competition held on the night between August 16th and 17th, featuring three master pyrotechnicians. The show, watched by thousands of spectators from the Via Nardelli belvedere and panoramic points overlooking the valley, is one of the most anticipated pyrotechnic events in all of Puglia.
Alongside the main events, the festival offers the Ancient Market Fair, a funfair, the blessing of animals on the church steps, the San Rocco Trophy cycling races on a city circuit, and other moments of community and solidarity. It is a unique opportunity to discover Locorotondo and the Valle d'Itria in the heart of their identity: between Locorotondo DOC wine, Apulian cuisine, and local hospitality.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition of the San Rocco Patronal Festival in Locorotondo has not yet been published. According to tradition, the festivities take place between August 6th and 17th, with the patron's solemnity on August 16th and the historic Valle d'Itria Pyrotechnic Festival on the night between the 16th and 17th. Check back on this page for confirmed dates, concerts, processions, and events as soon as the Festival Committee releases the official program.
