The festival bringing forgotten band scores back to life
"Fasano in Banda – The Festival of Rediscovered Music" is a unique event in Italy. Its stated goal is to recover and showcase unpublished or forgotten band repertoire, restoring dignity and an audience to the composers, copyists, musicians, and conductors who built the great tradition of Italian wind music. In Fasano, a town in the Itria Valley (Puglia), the band is not just a musical ensemble but a living piece of the city's identity.
The festival is conceived and organized by the "Ignazio Ciaia" Cultural Musical Association, which preserves the legacy of the historic Fasano City Band, founded in 1825. Two hundred years of musical history have left a wealth of scores, arrangements, and memories that the festival brings back to light. Names like Mosè Petrella-Tirone, director in the 1960s, or the local composer Antonio Gidiuli return to the spotlight alongside giants of the band repertoire such as Giuseppe Piantoni, Gennaro Abbate, and Angelo Angelini.
What makes "Fasano in Banda" special is its format: each concert weaves together the performance of the wind orchestra with theatrical narration, listening guides, and curated stage design. The festival is itinerant, selecting the most evocative locations in the Fasano area: the Lama d'Antico Rock Park with its rock-hewn churches, the Casina Municipale in Selva di Fasano, local masserie, and the Egnazia Archaeological Park, one of the most fascinating sites on the Apulian Adriatic coast. The evenings become a complete experience, uniting music, historical heritage, and landscape.
Part of the Municipality of Fasano's rich summer calendar, the festival is designed for families, music lovers, and visitors spending their summer in the Itria Valley. Events take place between June and the end of summer, generally with free admission upon reservation, to introduce the general public to a musical heritage that might otherwise be lost.
The fifth edition of "Fasano in Banda – The Festival of Rediscovered Music" confirms the format that combines the "Ignazio Ciaia" Wind Orchestra with theatrical storytelling and stage design. Opening the 2026 program on St. John's Night is a show that weaves together the sacred, the profane, and Mediterranean mythology; throughout the summer, the festival moves between the masserie and the Selva di Fasano. Admission is free with mandatory reservation at +39 371 5880044.
"St. John's Night: Between Sacred, Profane, and Mythology" — inaugural concert with narration by the famous actor Ettore Bassi. On stage: the "Ignazio Ciaia" Wind Orchestra, the "Timpanisti Fajanensis" and "Plumis Albis" percussion groups, choreography by the Oltredanza School, and performers from the "Menti Ardenti" Association. Presented by Marisa Cassone.
"Gino Galluzzi in Celebration" — concert by the "Ignazio Ciaia" Cultural Musical Association in the setting of the farmhouse.
"The Hits of the Casina" — closing concert in Selva di Fasano.
