A theatrical historical re-enactment of brigandage in the woods of Alberobello
The Night of the Brigands is one of the most evocative historical re-enactments in Puglia, a true itinerant theatrical performance held outdoors at night in the woods of Masseria Calmerio, in the Coreggia district of the town of Alberobello (Province of Bari). Every August, for two consecutive weekends, the audience is led along a woodland path of approximately 1.2 kilometers, featuring a series of theatrical scenes brought to life by over a hundred actors and costumed extras.
The show retraces the events of post-unification brigandage, the phenomenon that ignited Southern Italy in the years immediately following the Unification of 1861. At the heart of the narrative are real historical figures, such as Pasquale Romano (1833-1863), a former sergeant in the Bourbon army from Gioia del Colle, who led local armed bands and attacked the garrison of Alberobello. The choice of Masseria Calmerio is no coincidence: the structure, built in 1792, actually suffered raids by brigands during that historical period.
Visitors do not passively watch the show; they traverse the landscape, moving from one scene to the next, immersed in a carefully reconstructed atmosphere: soft lights, fires, sounds, and settings that recreate peasant life and the conditions of the South in the 1800s. Each edition explores a different aspect or character of that era, from charcoal burners to farmers, from brigands to female brigands, in a narrative that combines historical rigor with theatrical emotion.
The event is conceived and organized by the Associazione Sylva Tour and Didactics APS, with the patronage of the Municipality of Alberobello. Beyond its spectacular value, the event has a strong educational purpose and aims to promote the historical memory of the Apulian territory, which is often little known. The evening concludes with a tasting of local typical products, a convivial moment that completes the immersion in the peasant culture of the Murgia.
Set just a few kilometers from the famous historic center of Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage site with its unmistakable trulli, The Night of the Brigands offers visitors a different way to discover Puglia: not just the white architecture of the Monti and Aia Piccola districts, but also the countryside, the woods, and the forgotten stories of this land.
In 2026, The Night of the Brigands celebrates its 20th edition, a twenty-year milestone that confirms the event as one of the most anticipated summer appointments in the Murgia dei Trulli. The show takes place in the woods of Masseria Calmerio, in the Coreggia district of Alberobello, on the evenings of August 8, 9, 15, and 16, 2026, with makeup dates scheduled for August 10 and 17 in case of bad weather.
As per tradition, over a hundred actors and extras guide the public along a woodland path of approximately 1.2 km, divided into several theatrical scenes that reconstruct the events of post-unification brigandage. The evening concludes with a tasting of typical Apulian products.
The show unfolds along a 1.2 km path divided into theatrical scenes that tell, among others, the birth of the event, the return home in 1860, the woods of the masseria, the discontent of the charcoal burners, the attack on Alberobello on July 27, 1862, the brotherhood between brigands, and the final testament. Over a hundred actors and extras in period costumes perform.
Masseria Calmerio is located along the Provincial Road 81, in the Coreggia district, in Alberobello (BA), towards the border with Monopoli. By car, it is easily reached from the SS16 Adriatica or the SS172 dei Trulli. The nearest train station is Alberobello (Ferrovie del Sud Est).
Access is permitted by reservation only, via the official website lanottedeibriganti.com or via WhatsApp at +39 380 4111273. Places are limited for each evening.
Comfortable clothing and closed shoes suitable for the dirt and woodland path are recommended. The event takes place in the evening; makeup dates are scheduled in case of rain.
