About Saint Stephen Festival

The Saint Stephen Festival is the patronal feast of Putignano, in the province of Bari, which every year at the beginning of August transforms the historic center into a grand stage of faith, music, and tradition. Around August 3rd, the solemn day dedicated to the Protomartyr Saint, the program features Eucharistic celebrations, a solemn procession with the relic, brass band concerts, artistic illuminations along Corso Umberto I and Piazza Teatro, fireworks displays, and family entertainment. It is a deeply felt event and the heart of the Putignano summer.

The Patronal Feast of Putignano

The Saint Stephen Festival is the most anticipated event of the summer in Putignano, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, in the heart of Apulia. Every year, at the beginning of August, the historic center dresses up to honor the Protomartyr Saint, the patron of the community: an event that weaves together religious devotion, popular tradition, and spectacle, drawing locals and emigrants back to town for the occasion.

The Solemn Moment: August 3rd

The highlight of the festivities is August 3rd, the day of maximum solemnity. The Eucharistic celebration, presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Conversano-Monopoli, precedes the solemn gala procession that accompanies the relic and the image of Saint Stephen through the streets of the center, with the participation of confraternities, authorities, and the faithful. It is the spiritual heart of the festival, a rite renewed for generations that defines the religious identity of the Municipality of Putignano.

Music, Illuminations, and Fireworks

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich secular program. Artistic illuminations light up Corso Umberto I and Piazza Teatro, creating the light displays typical of Apulian patronal feasts. There is no shortage of brass band concerts—featuring renowned traveling bands from the region—live music, DJ sets, and themed evenings. Closing the days are the highly anticipated fireworks displays, which color the sky of Putignano and gather thousands of people.

A Historic Center in Celebration

During the days of the festival, the town center comes alive with food stalls, craft markets, and local products, while the former Mercato Boario hosts the traditional funfair. Ample space is dedicated to children, with entertainment, outdoor games, and street performers like stilt walkers, making the event suitable for all ages and families.

Saint Stephen, Patron of Putignano

The bond between Putignano and Saint Stephen is deep and ancient. The community celebrates its patron in summer, while December 26th—another date dedicated to the Saint—symbolically marks the opening of the famous Putignano Carnival with the Propaggini rite. The Saint Stephen Festival thus confirms itself as one of the strongest identity-defining moments of the Putignano calendar, capable of uniting religious tradition with the vitality of a community proud of its roots. The organization is managed by the Patronal Feast Committee, which prepares the program of celebrations every year.
