Marian devotion in Santo Stefano di Camastra, every third Sunday of September
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Feast of the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows is one of the most cherished religious observances in Santo Stefano di Camastra, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Messina overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast. Located at the gateway to the Nebrodi Park, the town is famous throughout Sicily for its brightly colored painted ceramics. Devotion to the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows has been documented since 1750 and is passed down from generation to generation, deeply intertwined with the identity of the local community.
The Addolorata is venerated as the co-patron of Santo Stefano di Camastra alongside Saint Nicholas of Bari, the principal patron saint celebrated in December. Her image accompanies the most intense moments of local religious life: in addition to the September feast, the statue of the Virgin is also carried in procession on Good Friday, alongside the statue of the dead Christ in a glass urn, in one of the most moving rites of the local Holy Week.
The highlight of the feast is the solemn procession on the third Sunday of September: the statue of the Addolorata travels through the historic center, with streets adorned by festive illuminations, accompanied by the brass band and the songs and prayers of the faithful. Numerous families participate in the procession, which is attended by civil and religious authorities and often by representatives from neighboring towns. The liturgical celebrations, rich in spiritual intensity, accompany the days of the feast with moments of prayer, reflection on the theme of sorrow and Marian consolation, and opportunities for the entire community to come together.
Like many Sicilian patronal feasts, the Addolorata celebration unites the strictly religious dimension with popular folklore: the illuminations, the band music, the festive atmosphere animating the village, and the strong sense of belonging make this event an opportunity to rediscover the roots of the local community. For visitors, it is also an excellent chance to explore Santo Stefano di Camastra, its artisan workshops, the Palazzo Trabia with its ceramics museum, and the scenic Tyrrhenian coast of Messina.
At the moment, the detailed program and precise dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been published by the parish and the Municipality of Santo Stefano di Camastra.
