The historic July 11th fair in the village of the towers in the Ernici Mountains
The San Pio Fair is one of the most cherished and anticipated events in Vico nel Lazio, a small town in the province of Frosinone, in the heart of the Ernici Mountains. Every year, on July 11th, the village comes alive from dawn until late in the evening: market stalls fill the streets, and the fair becomes an identity-defining moment that attracts not only residents but also former citizens scattered across Italy, who return to the village specifically for this occasion.
The choice of date is no coincidence. July 11th is the day dedicated to Pope Saint Pius I, a martyr whose name and spiritual significance resonate with Saint George the Martyr, the patron saint of Vico nel Lazio. On the same day, the Church also celebrates Saint Benedict of Nursia, abbot and patron saint of Europe, whose journey toward Montecassino ideally passes through the districts of this Ernici village. Traditionally, the fair preceded the patron saint's festivities and coincided with the preparation rites for summer communions and confirmations.
In the post-war period, the San Pio Fair marked the beginning of a special time for families: it was the occasion to purchase poultry, fine fabrics for trousseaus, household furnishings, and ceremonial clothing. Today, the event is more modest compared to the grandeur of the past, but it remains vibrant and heartfelt: among the stalls, one can find local products, textiles, household items, and handicrafts, in an atmosphere that preserves the flavor of the great village fairs of Ciociaria.
The fair is also an opportunity to discover one of the best-preserved medieval villages in Lazio. Vico nel Lazio sits at an altitude of 721 meters at the foot of Mount La Monna and retains a limestone wall punctuated by 25 square towers with Guelph battlements, accessed through three gates: Porta a Monte, Porta Guarcino, and Porta Orticelli. Inside, a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets designed to defend against wind and invaders awaits: strolling among the stalls in this setting is a unique experience.
The San Pio Fair is part of the Vico Estate program, a series of events promoted by the Municipality of Vico nel Lazio in collaboration with the Pro Loco, local associations, brotherhoods, and committees. From June to October, it accompanies citizens and visitors with food festivals, religious celebrations, literary reviews, sports events, music, and nature hikes in the Ernici Mountains. It is a way to experience the village in every season, with the July fair serving as the centerpiece of the Vicana summer.
The 2026 edition of the San Pio Fair took place on Saturday, July 11th, in accordance with the tradition linking the fair to the feast day of Pope Saint Pius I and Saint Benedict of Nursia, patron saint of Europe. The event was included in the official Vico Estate 2026 program, presented by the Municipality of Vico nel Lazio to accompany citizens, visitors, and tourists from June to October through tradition, culture, and nature.
Throughout the day, market stalls filled the streets of the fortified village from dawn until late in the evening, following the fair's established format: stalls offering local products, textiles, household items, and handicrafts, in a festive atmosphere that precedes the summer celebrations of the local community. An identity-defining moment that brings former citizens scattered across Italy back to the village every year.
