Guarcino in the Time of Malpensa

A re-enactment in the heart of Ciociaria

Guarcino in the Time of Malpensa is the event that, every December, transports the historic center of Guarcino—a small village of just over 1,700 inhabitants in the province of Frosinone, Lazio—back to the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. For an entire afternoon, the alleys, small squares, and stone portals of the town become the natural stage for a popular re-enactment that blends entertainment, craftsmanship, and historical memory, under the patronage of the Lazio Region.

The Legend of Malpensa

The event was born with the intent to keep the memory of the legendary soldier Malpensa alive, a heroic figure to whom local tradition attributes the salvation of the town. The legend dates back to 1186, when the army of Henry VI, son of Barbarossa, marched toward the South: beneath the walls of Guarcino, a local knight known as Malpensa is said to have challenged and defeated the imperial champion in a duel, forcing the army to retreat north. This episode is still celebrated by a statue in the town's main square and is also the focus of the Disfida del Malpensa, the great summer re-enactment of Guarcino, of which this winter gathering represents a more intimate and collected version.

What to expect

The day's program alternates between spectacular moments and immersive environmental reconstructions. The village streets are decorated with stalls, signs, and period scenery to offer visitors an authentic immersion into history.

Organizers

The event is promoted by the Municipality of Guarcino together with the Compagnia del Feudo, the historical re-enactment association that manages the staging and performers, with the collaboration of the Pro Loco Guarcino-Campocatino and UNPLI. The involvement of local associations is a key element of the event: costumes, sets, and performers are largely the result of the voluntary work of the Guarcino community.

Guarcino, a mountain village

Located at the foot of the Ernici Mountains, along the road that climbs toward the Campocatino plateau, Guarcino is one of the most characteristic villages in Ciociaria. The town is known for its healthy air, water springs, and a traditional confectionery specialty, the amaretti di Guarcino, which perfectly accompany festive days. The winter event takes place during a time of year when the village also comes alive for the holidays, offering an extra reason for a day trip from Frosinone or Rome, which is about eighty kilometers away.

Who is it for?

The re-enactment is designed for a broad, family-friendly audience: admission is free, and the shows, dances, and demonstrations of ancient crafts are accessible to children as well. It is a simple and genuine opportunity to discover a village in inland Lazio off the beaten tourist path, in an afternoon that concludes with the historic center beautifully illuminated.
