The village Carnival of the Vallo di Diano, blending memories of the past with a masked parade from Parco dei Mulini
Carnuluvaro is the name that has always been given to Carnival in San Pietro al Tanagro, a town of a few thousand inhabitants in the Vallo di Diano, in the province of Salerno (Campania). This is more than just a linguistic detail: it is a household word that, in the local dialect, captures the essence of a festival made by the village, with what the village has to offer. After years where the event had faded into the background, the community decided to reclaim it and restore a proper program, built from the ground up.
The rebirth of Carnuluvaro stems from a rare synergy for such a small town: six associations work together on the schedule, with the moral and institutional patronage of the Municipality of San Pietro al Tanagro. These include the Piรน Insieme Association, the Arte nelle Mani Association, the Pro Loco, the ArcheoArte Cooperative, the F.A.T.A. Association, and the Event Coordination Committee, supported by the ISKRA Social Cooperative and the Monte D'Oro Residence.
The true driving force, however, as the organizers themselves recount, is the work of the town's mothers and women: they are the ones who sew the costumes, prepare the decorations, and coordinate the children, guided by the ArcheoArte Cooperative and the Arte nelle Mani Association. It is a handcrafted Carnival in the most literal sense, where every mask passes through the hands of someone living just a few meters from the square.
The highlight is the grand masked parade on Tuesday, which starts at Parco dei Mulini and reaches the square. The park is one of the town's most iconic landmarks: a small valley of about ten hectares that opens like a natural amphitheater between two wooded slopes, crossed by the Setone stream and dotted with the ancient water mills that give it its name. Seeing a procession of masks, music, and colors emerge from it is one of the most striking images of this festival.
Each year, the parade adopts a theme that guides the costumes, decorations, and sets, becoming the common thread of the day. Upon arriving in the square, the parade transforms into a collective celebration with entertainment, shows, and moments of sharing open to all, residents and visitors alike.
Alongside the spectacle, Carnuluvaro has a more intimate vocation. The opening day is dedicated to "Chatting with the Grandparents", an intergenerational meeting hosted by the Montedoro Residence: the elderly share memories, anecdotes, and customs of the Carnival of yesteryear with the younger generation, from improvised masks to seasonal sweets, and from house-to-house begging to traditional songs. It is the community's chosen way to ground the festival in real memory rather than a fictional reconstruction.
San Pietro al Tanagro is located in the heart of the Vallo di Diano, the wide plain crossed by the Tanagro river that marks the south of the province of Salerno, on the edge of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. It is a territory where village festivals still mark the calendar: summer food festivals, patron saint rites, and events like Le Notti dei Mulini, the festival that enlivens the same Setone mills in the summer. Carnuluvaro is the winter piece of this mosaic and allows you to discover the village in a season when tourism is almost absent.
Visitors from outside will find a festival of modest size, but all the more welcoming for it: in San Pietro al Tanagro, Carnival is not a show to be watched from behind a barrier; it is something you inevitably end up taking part in.
The 2026 Carnival of San Pietro al Tanagro (province of Salerno, Campania) was much more than just a date on the calendar: it was the moment the village put its Carnuluvaro back at the center. The schedule, spread over Monday, February 16, and Tuesday, February 17, 2026, was born from a collective effort involving six local associations, institutions, and โ as the organizers repeatedly recalled โ the town's mothers and women, the true protagonists in preparing costumes and decorations.
The common thread chosen for Tuesday's parade was "Alice in Wonderland", an imagery that lent itself well to the creativity of the workshops: masks, costumed groups, and sets accompanied the procession along the route from Parco dei Mulini to the town square, where the parade turned into a collective celebration with entertainment and shows.
The choice to open the program with "Chatting with the Grandparents" at the Montedoro Residence gave the 2026 edition a precise tone: before parading, listen. Memories, stories, and traditions of the Carnival of yesteryear were collected from the voices of the elderly and passed on to the younger generation, in a dialogue between generations that became an integral part of the festival.
The program was promoted in synergy by the Piรน Insieme Association, the Arte nelle Mani Association, the Pro Loco, the ArcheoArte Cooperative, the F.A.T.A. Association, and the Event Coordination Committee, with the collaboration of the ISKRA Social Cooperative and the Monte D'Oro Residence, and with the moral and institutional patronage of the Municipality of San Pietro al Tanagro.
Note from the organizers: in case of adverse weather conditions, the parade is postponed to the following Sunday, while the party takes place regularly in the municipal premises, adapted to the conditions of the moment.
By car: A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, exit at Atena Lucana or Polla, then take the SS19 delle Calabrie towards Sant'Arsenio / San Pietro al Tanagro (a few kilometers from the junction). The nearest train stations are on the Battipaglia-Potenza line; for the Vallo di Diano, the car remains the most practical means of transport, supplemented by regional bus lines connecting Salerno and Potenza to the towns of the plain.
The parade starts from Parco dei Mulini, at the gates of the historic center, and ends in the square. In case of bad weather, the parade is postponed, and the party moves to municipal premises.
The event has free admission: the parade, entertainment, and shows in the square are open to the entire community and visitors.
