The most anticipated festival in Piaggine, featuring a procession, brass band, market stalls, and fireworks at the foot of Monte Cervati
In Piaggine, a village of just over a thousand inhabitants perched at an altitude of 630 meters in the upper Cilento, in the province of Salerno (Campania), Santa Filomena is the most venerated saint. Her feast day, August 23rd, has for generations marked the moment when the village fills up again: emigrants return, relatives arrive from the cities, and vacationers who spend their summer at the foot of Monte Cervati gather. The Santa Filomena Festival is the biggest event in the Piaggine calendar, the one around which holidays and homecomings have always been organized.
The heart of the festival is the upper part of Piaggine, the network of alleys, stairways, and squares that climb toward the mountain. For the occasion, the streets are adorned with lights, balconies are decorated, and stalls line the route. It is a village festival layout that has remained essentially unchanged: no large festival stages, but a setting made of lights, brass band music, and voices mingling until late at night.
Liturgy and popular tradition intertwine throughout the two main days. The elements that return every year are:
In the past, the Opera di S. Filomena was also performed, a popular sacred play that told the story of the saint: a piece of devotional theater that gives a measure of how ancient this tradition is in Piaggine.
Historically linked to the religious festivities is the Santa Filomena Fair, which in local tradition is held on August 21st in the upper part of the town, effectively opening the festival period. Born as a trading appointment for a mountain village of shepherds, the fair today maintains its function as a large open-air market and a meeting point for the entire Alto Calore area.
Santa Filomena closes a particularly busy summer calendar for such a small village. In the program of the Municipality of Piaggine, between July and August, the rites of the Madonna del Carmine (July 15-16), the festivities of the Madonna della Neve on Monte Cervati (August 4-5), the Madonna del Monte Vivo on Ferragosto, the Porcini Mushroom Festival at Rampa Cappuccini, and the historic Coppa Cervati, a sports competition now in its 45th edition, follow one another. Those who arrive for Santa Filomena therefore find a village already in full swing, with venues open and lively evenings even in the days preceding.
The setting is one of the most beautiful in inland Campania: Piaggine is located in the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, on the slopes of Monte Cervati (1,899 m), the highest peak in the region, and not far from the springs of the Calore river. The village preserves churches of ancient foundation, including that of San Nicola and that of the Madonna del Carmine, linked to the ancient Capuchin monastery. Combining the festival with a hike on the Cervati or a day along the Calore is the best way to understand this part of the mountain Cilento, very different from the Cilento of the beaches.
It is a community festival rather than a tourist event: you move on foot, eat in homes or in the few local spots in the center, and stay on the street until late. The audience is made up mainly of locals and families who have returned for the occasion, and for this very reason, the welcome for those arriving from outside is direct and curious. Those looking for Cilento authenticity, without filters and without the crowds of a large event, will find it here.
The 2026 edition of the Santa Filomena Festival is set for Saturday, August 22nd and Sunday, August 23rd, 2026 in Piaggine, in the province of Salerno. The dates were communicated by the Municipality as part of the summer events program, which this year lines up religious commemorations, live music, and the promotion of local products from mid-July to the end of August.
The festival arrives immediately after the 7th Porcini Mushroom Festival (August 19-21 at Rampa Cappuccini) and after the Ferragosto evenings dedicated to the Madonna del Monte Vivo: those who come up to Piaggine in the last decade of August will find a village in full swing, with events almost every evening. August 22nd also features a musical appointment with Radio Acustica at Bar Scascio, while the 45th Coppa Cervati accompanies the entire period, from July 29th to August 22nd.
The heart, however, remains the day of August 23rd, the feast of Santa Filomena: the most venerated saint of the village, celebrated in the upper part of the town with the procession, the music of the brass band, the stalls, and the concluding fireworks.
By car: from the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, take the Sicignano-Petina or Atena Lucana exit, then the SS488 and provincial roads towards the Alto Calore; from Vallo della Lucania, drive up through Novi Velia and Vallo Scalo. From Salerno, the trip takes about 2 hours. By train: Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo station, then local bus lines (connections are infrequent, check the schedules). Nearest airport: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi.
On festival days, the upper part of the village is pedestrianized and crowded: it is best to leave the car in the wide spaces along the access road and walk up.
The procession, brass band, stalls, and fireworks are free to attend, as per the tradition of Cilento patronal festivals.
In Piaggine and neighboring towns (Sacco, Valle dell'Angelo, Laurino) you can find B&Bs, farmhouses, and holiday homes: in August, it is essential to book well in advance. On the table, the dishes of the Cilento mountains: cavatielli, porcini mushrooms from the Cervati, local meats, and cheeses.
Bring comfortable shoes for the climbs in the historic center and a sweatshirt: at 630 meters, the late August evenings are cool. For the final times of masses, the procession, and fireworks, it is advisable to consult the notices of the Municipality of Piaggine and the posters displayed in the village.
