About Thousand-Egg Omelette Festival

In the days leading up to the night of San Lorenzo, the Certosa di Padula travels back to 1535: Renaissance processions, knights, and over two hundred costumed participants re-enact the arrival of Emperor Charles V returning from his victorious campaign in Tunis. The highlight is the public preparation of the legendary thousand-egg omelette, cooked in a massive rotating pan operated by an ingenious mechanical device and then distributed for free to visitors, accompanied by music, folk theatre, and the flavours of the Vallo di Diano.

A festival that takes the Certosa back to 1535

Padula in Celebration of Charles V and the Thousand-Egg Omelette is the grand historical re-enactment of the Municipality of Padula, in the Vallo di Diano, in the Province of Salerno (Campania). Every year, in the days leading up to the night of San Lorenzo, the monumental complex of the Certosa di San Lorenzo — one of the largest Carthusian monasteries in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site — becomes the natural stage for three evenings dedicated to the history, culture, and traditions of the region.

The legend of the thousand-egg omelette

The episode celebrated by the festival was already recounted in 1640 by the historian Camillo Tutini. After his victory in Tunis over the Ottoman admiral Khayr al-Din, known as Barbarossa, Emperor Charles V travelled up the peninsula and stopped in Padula on August 10, 1535, as a guest of the Carthusian monks. To feed the sovereign and his retinue, tradition holds that the monks prepared a gigantic omelette in the kitchen, whisking a thousand eggs by hand: a simple dish, respectful of the monastic rule, yet impressive enough to honour an emperor.

The modern re-enactment brings that gesture to the square: the omelette is cooked in front of the public in a rotating steel pan, handcrafted and moved by a mechanical system of counterweights and pulleys inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's designs, which allows the pan to be raised, lowered, and turned. At the end, the omelette is distributed for free to those present.

Processions, knights, and costumed participants

The event is organised by the Pro Loco Padula Association, led by president Vincenzo Petrizzo, with artistic direction by Salvatore Ungaro. The historical procession in Renaissance attire parades along the walls and courtyards of the Certosa, involving over two hundred participants, together with the Knights of the Papal Bull from Cava de' Tirreni and the Knights of Charles V. There is no shortage of flag-wavers, musicians, jugglers, and theatrical scenes that recount the life of the monastery and the history of the Vallo di Diano.

The role of the emperor is entrusted each year to a well-known face from the world of entertainment: in recent years, actors and television presenters have taken turns in the role, a habit that has helped give the event national visibility.

Music, theatre, and taste

  • Folk and vernacular theatre: local companies perform one-act plays in dialect and narratives linked to peasant memory.
  • Concerts: evenings of singer-songwriter, folk, and Cilento music, often with tributes to the great songwriters of the South.
  • Local gastronomy: stands and tastings featuring typical products of the Vallo di Diano and Cilento, from cheeses and cured meats to homemade pasta and extra virgin olive oil.
  • Folk rhythms: the closing is traditionally entrusted to percussion groups and Campanian folk music.

A recognised heritage

Born in 1996, the festival is now included in the Portal of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture, in the section dedicated to historical re-enactments, as an annual August event linked to the era of Charles V. Over the years, it has attracted several thousand participants to each edition, becoming one of the defining events of the Vallo di Diano summer and one of the most evocative ways to discover the Certosa at night.

Why visit

Those who arrive in Padula during these days will find three things that are rarely encountered in the same place: an extraordinary monument open in the evening, a well-curated historical re-enactment involving the entire town, and a gastronomic tradition that you can literally taste. It is an experience also suitable for families, with outdoor shows and free admission to the evenings.

Thousand-Egg Omelette Festival — edition 2026

The 29th edition of Padula in Celebration of Charles V and the Thousand-Egg Omelette takes place from August 8th to 10th, 2026, at the Certosa di San Lorenzo. Three evenings of theatre, music, and historical re-enactment organised by Pro Loco Padula, with artistic direction by Salvatore Ungaro. Actor Lorenzo Flaherty plays the role of Emperor Charles V on the final evening of August 10th, when the Renaissance procession precedes the public cooking of the thousand-egg omelette and its free distribution to the public.

What to expect in 2026

The twenty-ninth edition returns to the courtyards of the Certosa di San Lorenzo in Padula, in the Province of Salerno, with the now-consolidated formula of three evenings: two dedicated to theatre, music, and local storytelling, and the third to the grand historical re-enactment.

The common thread chosen by the organisers looks at the origins of the monastery, founded in 1306 by Tommaso Sanseverino, and imagines an ideal dialogue between the founder and Saint Thomas Aquinas, leading up to the night of August 10th and the arrival of Charles V returning from the Battle of Tunis.

The highlight of August 10th

The final day is dedicated to the re-enactment with the Knights of the Papal Bull, the procession in period costumes along the walls of the Certosa, and the public preparation of the thousand-egg omelette in the rotating pan that is the symbol of the event. The omelette is then distributed for free to those present. Closing the event are the Bottari di Macerata Campania with the 'Pastellese Sound Group Tour 2026'.

Admission

As per tradition, the evenings have free admission and the tasting of the omelette is free.
