A Renaissance re-enactment of Emperor Charles V's visit to the historic center of Sala Consilina
In the town of Sala Consilina, in the province of Salerno, the Arts, Crafts and Customs Festival has been the summer event that takes the historic center back five centuries for nearly thirty years. For three evenings, the alleys and squares of the Santo Stefano and Sant'Eustachio districts become an open-air theater: flags, torches, market stalls, encampments, and taverns transform the village into a continuous Renaissance stage, blurring the lines between performance and village life.
The event is one of the most popular re-enactments in the Vallo di Diano and, more broadly, in inland Campania: a piece of collective identity built by residents, local families, and young people who don costumes and take part in the processions every year.
The historical theme is precise and documented by local memory: in 1535, Emperor Charles V, returning from the Tunis expedition, passed through these territories, and the community of the «Terra de la Sala» gave him a sumptuous welcome. It is this episode that the festival stages, featuring the reception of the emperor, the escort of the Landsknechts, the procession of the Mayor and noble families, dignitaries, men-at-arms, and the common people.
The heart of the festival is the grand historical procession, which splits into the people's procession and the nobles' procession, totaling over 300 performers. The processions are accompanied by games and tournaments faithfully reproduced from period sources:
The evenings conclude with a grand Commedia dell'Arte show featuring stilt walkers, fire games, duels with flaming swords, and pyrotechnic effects.
Along the route, you will find the Renaissance market and the Oriental market, military encampments with soldiers' tents, and above all, the workshops of ancient crafts, which give the festival its name: the blacksmith, the potter, the weaver, the apothecary, the ropemaker, and other artisans work live in front of the public. This is the most educational part of the event and the most suitable for families with children.
The gastronomic chapter is an integral part of the re-enactment. In the squares and courtyards of the noble palaces, themed taverns and refreshment points open, each with its own identity: the Dama di Bacco, set up in the garden of Palazzo Favata as a Renaissance tavern dedicated to wine; the Ampolla d'Oriente, with skewers and oriental vibes; and the Vizi di Ciacco, a refreshment point with period liqueurs and sweets. Nearby, food stalls offer traditional dishes from the Vallo di Diano.
The festival is managed by the Diego Gatta Arts and Crafts Cultural Association, which coordinates performers, historical groups from all over Italy, street theater companies, and local volunteers. After a six-year hiatus, the event returned in 2025 with its 27th edition and continues in 2026 with the 28th.
The event is traditionally held in the first half of August, starting in the late afternoon and continuing late into the night. Everything takes place on foot in the historic center of Sala Consilina, between the Grancia di San Lorenzo — where the processions start — Piazza Umberto I, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Piazza Mercato, and the alleys of the two historic districts.
From August 7 to 9, 2026, the historic center of Sala Consilina, in the province of Salerno, hosts the 28th edition of the Arts, Crafts and Customs Festival. The direction is, as always, by the Diego Gatta Arts and Crafts Cultural Association, which brings back the welcome given in 1535 to Emperor Charles V returning from the Tunis expedition.
The Santo Stefano and Sant'Eustachio districts return to being a grand Renaissance set: two processions — one of the people and one of the nobles — featuring over 300 performers, faithfully reproduced jousts and tournaments, Renaissance and Oriental markets, military camps, ancient craft workshops, and taverns where one eats and drinks as in the 16th century.
The novelty of 2026 is the special participation of actor Gilles Rocca, who plays the emperor on Sunday, August 9. The same day opens with the «Aperitif with Charles V» on Via Mezzacapo, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with entertainment and shows.
Exact times for individual shows will be released by the organization in the days immediately preceding the event.
By car: Take the Sala Consilina exit on the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway (Salerno-Reggio Calabria), then follow signs for the center. During the festival evenings, the historic center is closed to traffic: it is best to leave your car in the parking lots in the lower part of the town and walk up.
By train: The reference stations are Sapri or Salerno, with onward travel by bus; the Vallo di Diano is served by regional bus lines that stop in Sala Consilina.
The event takes place in the evening, opening in the late afternoon (in 2025 from 6:30 PM) with shows until late at night. There is no information regarding tickets for access to the historic center and the processions; food and drinks in the taverns and food stalls are paid for on-site.
Sala Consilina and the nearby towns of the Vallo di Diano (Padula, Teggiano, Atena Lucana, Polla) offer farmhouses, B&Bs, and small hotels. In August, it is advisable to book in advance.
