Mass, procession, and traditional chants in the Alburni highlands
The Madonna della Montagna Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Sant'Angelo a Fasanella, a small town in the province of Salerno, Campania, nestled at an altitude of about 650 meters on the southeastern slopes of the Alburni Mountains in the Cilento hinterland. Here, Marian devotion does not stay confined within the walls of a village church: it rises upward, toward the chapel that dominates the valley, and then descends again with the community in tow. It is a festival that beautifully illustrates the ancient bond between this village and its mountain.
The program is simple, and for that very reason, intense. It begins with Holy Mass celebrated in the Madonna delle Grazie chapel, located on the heights above the town. At the end of the service, the procession takes shape, bringing the sacred image back toward the historic center, accompanied by the «Città di Camerota» band, a brass ensemble well-known in Cilento and a regular presence at the region's major religious festivals.
The most characteristic feature of the day is the processional chants: devotional melodies in honor of the Madonna, passed down orally from generation to generation and sung by the faithful during the descent toward the village. There are no scores or stages: it is the collective voice of the community that accompanies the journey, alternating with the sound of the brass instruments. For visitors, this is the most evocative moment of the entire festival, and also the most authentic: a fragment of Campanian oral culture that is still alive and practiced, not reconstructed for tourists.
In 2026, the Madonna della Montagna Festival is part of «Abitare l'estate», the program through which the Municipality of Sant'Angelo a Fasanella brings together religious, cultural, sporting, and food and wine events between July and August. Those who choose to stay for a few days will find a packed calendar: Capo la Corte in Festa with traditional dishes (August 13), the Tango tra gli Alburni evening (August 14), the day dedicated to cheeses Caseus (August 18), and above all the Fasanella Fest from August 20 to 22, featuring I Cantori di Carpino, La Tarantula Garganica, and Enzo Avitabile e i Bottari di Portico to close the festival.
It is worth arriving a few hours early. Sant'Angelo a Fasanella preserves two extraordinary sites: the Cave-sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo, an ancient place of worship carved into the rock and linked in the Middle Ages to the Benedictine monks of the Santissima Trinità di Cava de' Tirreni, and the Antece, the mysterious stone warrior carved on the Costa Palomba at an altitude of about 1,125 meters and attributed to the 4th century BC. In the town center, you can also visit the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Franciscan convent, and the Madonna della Pinna chapel, while the Auso spring offers a waterfall of about eight meters.
This is not a food festival for thousands of people nor a ticketed event: it is a village feast, free and open to everyone, where visitors are welcomed without filters. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes for the climb to the chapel, bring water and a hat (in early August, the Alburni sun is unforgiving during the middle of the day), and stay until the procession returns, when the religious celebration naturally dissolves into a community party.
On Sunday, August 9, 2026, Sant'Angelo a Fasanella, in the province of Salerno, renews its devotion to the Madonna della Montagna. The celebration begins with Holy Mass in the Madonna delle Grazie chapel, on the heights overlooking the village, and continues with the procession returning to the town center, accompanied by the «Città di Camerota» band.
The most defining moment remains the processional chants, passed down orally and sung by the faithful along the entire descent route. The festival is the first event in August of the «Abitare l'estate 2026» program, which then continues with Capo la Corte in Festa, Caseus, and the Fasanella Fest.
Exact times are communicated by the Municipality of Sant'Angelo a Fasanella and the parish in the days immediately preceding the festival.
Sant'Angelo a Fasanella can be reached by car from the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, taking the Sicignano degli Alburni or Petina exits and continuing along the Alburni provincial roads; from Salerno, the journey takes just over an hour. The reference train station is Sicignano degli Alburni: the final stretch can only be covered by car or local bus lines, which have reduced service on holidays.
Participation in the Mass and the procession is free and open to all. The exact times for the day are announced by the Municipality and the parish in the days immediately preceding the festival.
