About San Modestino

Every year from February 11th to 14th, Avellino gathers to honor San Modestino, the bishop, martyr, and patron saint of the city and diocese. A three-day preparatory triduum, solemn cathedral services, and the traditional focarone bonfire mark four days where faith blends with the civic identity of this Irpinian capital. Amidst street performers, traditional drummers, and open shops, the patronal festival transforms the historic center into a vibrant city-wide celebration.

The most iconic festival of the Irpinian capital

In the Municipality of Avellino, the capital of the province of the same name in Campania, February 14th is more than just Valentine's Day: it is the date when the entire city and diocese celebrate San Modestino, bishop and martyr, the primary patron saint alongside his companions Fiorentino and Flaviano. The San Modestino Festival begins on February 11th with a preparatory triduum and culminates on the 14th with the liturgical feast, blending popular devotion, ancient rites, and the civic life of the historic center in a uniquely Irpinian way.

Who was San Modestino

Tradition holds that he was the Bishop of Antioch who fled to Irpinia to escape persecution, where he was martyred alongside Fiorentino and Flaviano on February 14th. The cult gained city-wide importance in 1166, when Bishop Guglielmo discovered the relics of the three martyrs in the Urbiniano area near Mercogliano. Since then, San Modestino has been the primary patron of Avellino, with his relics housed in the Cathedral. For centuries, the anniversary was marked by a solemn procession featuring city authorities in Renaissance and Baroque attire, the mayor escorted by arquebusiers alongside the bishop, and the saint's silver bust carried through the streets.

The triduum and Cathedral celebrations

The religious heart of the festival is the triduum held on February 11th, 12th, and 13th, with evening services that the diocese imbues with special significance each year, such as the Anointing of the Sick, the conferring of ministries, and diaconal ordinations. On February 14th, the day begins with morning mass and continues with a solemn concelebration presided over by Bishop Arturo Aiello, attended by priests from across the city and diocese. During the service, the Misericordia of Avellino presents the oil for the San Modestino lamp, a symbolic gesture of devotion and charity.

The focarone and the wooden logs

The most beloved tradition is the San Modestino focarone: a large, blessed bonfire lit in front of the church, around which the community gathers. The rite is preceded by the blessing of wooden logs, which the faithful carry home as a sign of protection. In the depth of winter, this fire represents warmth, light, and a memory of martyrdom—a simple language passed down through generations of Avellino families.

The «San Modestino Night»

Alongside the liturgical program, the Municipality of Avellino has for some years promoted the «San Modestino Night», the secular version of the festival. From the morning, the Corso and the streets of the center fill with street performers—jugglers, acrobats, puppeteers, bubble artists, and fire-eaters—with both fixed and roaming acts. In the afternoon, the Bottari of Macerata Campania arrive, bringing their hypnotic rhythms played on barrels, vats, and scythes, a hallmark of Campanian folklore. Free guided tours of «Underground Avellino» are also available, exploring the tunnels, crypts, and hypogeal chambers of the ancient city, while local businesses stay open late for the «Commerce Night».

Why it's worth the trip

  • It is the best opportunity to see Avellino in its most authentic light, far from mass tourism circuits.
  • The evening focarone is a rare example of an urban fire ritual in an Italian provincial capital.
  • All religious celebrations and street performances are free to attend.
  • The February 14th date allows you to combine the patronal festival with a stroll through a historic center already decorated for Valentine's Day.
  • Irpinia is right at your doorstep: Mercogliano and the Montevergine Sanctuary, the villages of the Partenio, and the Taurasi wineries are all just a few kilometers away.

A heritage of inland Campania

The San Modestino festival is one of the events that best captures the essence of inland Campania: not the sea or postcard-perfect folklore, but a hillside city that finds itself in its saint, its cathedral, and a fire lit in the town square. Visitors will find a welcoming community, a compact historic center, and an Irpinian culinary tradition—from Bagnoli black truffles to mountain cheeses, and from Fiano di Avellino to Greco di Tufo—that perfectly completes the festive day.

San Modestino — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the San Modestino Festival took place in Avellino from February 11th to 14th, with the preparatory triduum culminating in the liturgical feast on Saturday the 14th. Four days marked by the Anointing of the Sick, the conferring of the lectorate, diaconal ordinations, and the solemn concelebration presided over by Bishop Arturo Aiello, closing in the evening with the lighting of the focarone, which was designed to be child-friendly this year.

San Modestino 2026: four days of devotion and civic identity

From February 11th to 14th, 2026, the Church of Avellino celebrated the feast in honor of San Modestino, bishop and martyr, patron of the city and diocese. The preparatory triduum opened on Wednesday the 11th with the Eucharistic celebration and the rite of the Anointing of the Sick, continued on Thursday the 12th with the conferring of the ministry of lector, and concluded on Friday the 13th with the ordination of three new deacons, presided over by Bishop Arturo Aiello.

The liturgical feast of Saturday, February 14th

The patron saint's day began at 8:30 AM with holy mass and reached its central moment at 11:00 AM with the solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by the bishop, with the participation of priests from the city and diocese; during the rite, the oil for the San Modestino lamp was presented, offered by the Misericordia of Avellino as a sign of devotion and charity. In the afternoon, at 6:30 PM, the celebration was animated by children and families, followed by the blessing of the traditional wooden logs.

The child-friendly focarone

The day concluded at 7:30 PM with the lighting and blessing of the San Modestino focarone. For the 2026 edition, the brazier was built in smaller proportions, specifically designed so that even the youngest could approach the sign of the fire: a light that warms and unites the community around the cathedral and the square in front, places of worship and identity for the people of Avellino.
