The autumn festival in the Tuscia region of Viterbo: mushrooms, new olive oil, and Teverina wine

In the heart of the Tuscia region, the village of Castiglione in Teverina—located in the province of Viterbo, Lazio, overlooking the Tiber Valley near the Umbrian border—dedicates an entire weekend each autumn to its most iconic products. The San Martino Festival - Oil, Mushrooms and Wine is one of the most beloved food and wine festivals in the area, drawing visitors from across the region and neighboring provinces.
The event takes its name from Saint Martin, whose feast day on November 11th traditionally marks the transformation of must into wine and the arrival of the new olive oil. In Piazza Maggiore and throughout the historic center, food stalls serve mushroom-based dishes for lunch and dinner, paired with local wine and new Teverina olive oil. The scents and flavors of the forest floor define a culinary journey that celebrates traditional rural cuisine and the typical products of Lazio.
Castiglione in Teverina is recognized as a Città del Vino (City of Wine) and is a member of the Cittaslow network, reflecting its commitment to quality and the good life. During the festival, the MUVIS - Wine and Agri-food Science Museum, housed in the village's evocative underground cellars, opens its doors for exhibitions, conferences, and tastings, while guided tours of ancient cellars and local olive mills are organized.
Beyond the gastronomy, the program is enriched with artisan markets, displays of local products, musical performances, and folkloric events that bring the three days to life. The intimate atmosphere of the village, with its narrow alleys and squares, provides the perfect setting to rediscover the popular traditions of the Tuscia region.
Reaching its thirtieth edition in 2025, the San Martino Festival is organized by the SS Crocifisso Celebration Committee with the support of the Municipality of Castiglione in Teverina. It has become a classic autumn event in the Viterbo area, where hospitality, conviviality, and a love for the land come together over a glass of wine and a plate of mushrooms.
As every year, the San Martino Festival is expected to return to animate Piazza Maggiore and the historic center of Castiglione in Teverina in November 2026, with stalls dedicated to mushrooms, local wine, and new Teverina olive oil. At the moment, the organizers have not yet published the official dates or the program: information will be updated as soon as it becomes available.
