In the heart of the Viterbo Tuscia region, every autumn the Ghost Village of Celleno awakens for one of the most evocative Halloween events in Lazio: The Haunted Castle. For two evenings, the ancient abandoned historic center, dominated by the Orsini Castle, becomes an open-air theater populated by ghostly characters, immersive sets, and light displays, in an atmosphere as fascinating as it is eerie.

A village seemingly born for Halloween

Celleno Antica is a unique place: built on a tuff spur, the old settlement was gradually abandoned starting in the 1930s due to earthquakes and landslides, until the final relocation of the inhabitants to the nearby Celleno Nuova. Today, the Ghost Village, protected and rediscovered as a cultural attraction, has been listed by The Telegraph among the most beautiful lost-in-time towns in Italy. Its silent houses, deserted alleys, and the bulk of the castle offer a natural backdrop that, during the event, transforms into a spine-tingling path.

The route and activities

The public follows a thematic itinerary through scary sets, evocative caves, and light installations, encountering monstrous creatures and characters inspired by Halloween lore along the way. The event is not just for horror fans: there is plenty of space dedicated to families and children.

A community event

The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Celleno, in the Municipality of Celleno, in the Province of Viterbo, and was created with the goal of combining Halloween fun with the promotion of one of the most fascinating places in Lazio. Every year, the initiative attracts numerous visitors from Tuscia, Rome, and Umbria, thanks to its location halfway between Viterbo and Orvieto and just over an hour from the capital.
