The release of the doves and the Sicilian cart parade in the Benedictine village of Monreale
The San Martino delle Scale Spring Festival is a historic event held annually in the mountain hamlet of San Martino delle Scale, within the Municipality of Monreale, in the Province of Palermo. Nestled in the woods of western Sicily, just a few kilometers from the famous Norman Cathedral of Monreale, the small village gathers around its imposing Benedictine abbey, welcoming hundreds of visitors each spring for one of the most heartfelt popular events in the region.
The symbolic heart of the festival is rooted in a charming legend dating back to the 14th century. It is said that during a particularly harsh winter, numerous birds sought shelter inside the abbey's cloister: the Benedictine abbot had a large aviary built to feed and protect them from the cold, only to release them when the warm season returned. This gesture of hospitality inspired the ritual that still characterizes the event today: the release of the doves, a symbol of rebirth and renewed harmony between man and nature.
Among the most anticipated moments is the parade of Sicilian carts, richly decorated according to tradition, which travel through the village streets accompanied by folk groups in costume. The characteristic dances, traditional dialect songs, and the vibrant colors of the horse-drawn carts evoke the atmosphere of rural Sicily from times past, in a procession that starts from the village squares and winds its way to the center of the festivities.
The Spring Festival is also an opportunity to discover the area's gastronomic excellence. Along the route set up by the Pro Loco San Martino delle Scale, visitors can taste homemade bread, Sicilian cheeses and dairy products, extra virgin olive oil, sfincione, cookies, honey, and other specialties from the Palermitan hinterland, often accompanied by live cooking shows and demonstrations of how mozzarella, tuma, and ricotta are made.
The event also features initiatives dedicated to the environment and children, such as the Green Barter—a free exchange of plants and seeds—and workshops for children focused on respecting nature. Organized by the Pro Loco with the patronage of the Municipality of Monreale and the collaboration of the Abbey of San Martino delle Scale, the festival represents a moment of strong cohesion for the local community and an ideal opportunity to discover an authentic, green corner of Sicily.
The 68th edition of the Spring Festival took place on Sunday, April 12, 2026, in San Martino delle Scale, a hamlet of the Municipality of Monreale (PA). The day began at 8:00 AM in Piazza Semeria with the setting up of the Spring Arch and the opening of the stands. At 10:00 AM, in Piazza Platani, the preparation of the Sicilian carts began, followed at 11:00 AM by the parade of the carts and the folk group through the village streets. At 12:30 PM, in Piazza Semeria, the evocative release of the doves took place, along with a cooking show featuring tastings of mozzarella, tuma, and ricotta. Initiatives also included the Green Barter, the "little green thumbs" workshop for children, and the Pro Loco tasting trail with bread, cheeses, oil, sfincione, cookies, and honey.
San Martino delle Scale is a mountain hamlet in the Municipality of Monreale (PA), reachable by car from Palermo in about 30-40 minutes via the SP69 road towards Boccadifalco and Pioppo. The village is also connected by local bus lines.
The festival traditionally takes place on a Sunday in spring, between late April and early May, with a program that unfolds throughout the day, from morning to early afternoon.
Access to the event and activities is free; tastings of local products may require a small contribution at the Pro Loco stands.
We recommend comfortable clothing for walking through the village streets and taking advantage of the day to visit the Benedictine abbey and the surrounding woods.
