About San Lucido Festival

Every year on July 27th and 28th, Aquara pauses to honor San Lucido, the Benedictine monk born in this Alburni village who became the community's patron saint. Two days marked by a novena, the unveiling of the silver bust, a solemn mass with the bishop, and a long procession through every district of the historic center, accompanied by hymns, votive offerings, and a brass band. As the statue returns to the Sanctuary, fireworks light up the Calore Valley.

A patronal festival in the heart of the Alburni

In Aquara, a village in the Province of Salerno overlooking the Calore Valley at the gateway to the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, the San Lucido Patronal Festival is the most cherished event of the year. Every July 27th and 28th, the town gathers around its saint: two days where popular devotion, brass band music, and local conviviality intertwine in a collective liturgy that goes far beyond a simple religious rite.

San Lucido, a saint born in the village

San Lucido is not a patron saint adopted by devotional tradition; according to hagiographic records, he was born right here in Aquara around 960 AD. Entrusted as a boy to the monks of the monastery of San Pietro, he became a Benedictine, moved to Montecassino, served as an advisor to Prince Guaimario in Salerno, and went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Upon his return, he founded the monastery of Santa Maria dell'Albaneta and built a small Marian church near his birthplace. His cult, practiced without interruption by his fellow villagers, was officially recognized by Pope Leo XIII with a decree from the Sacred Congregation of Rites on January 8, 1880.

The relic of his skull, originally kept in the monastery of San Pietro, was moved around 1500 to the parish church of San Nicola di Bari, where the Sanctuary of San Lucido is still located today. The silver bust that parades in the procession is the result of a history of tenacious attachment: stolen in 1895 and again in 1975, it was recreated each time thanks to the offerings of the people of Aquara. The liturgical calendar remembers San Lucido on December 5th, but in Aquara, the patron's solemnity is celebrated in mid-July, when the village is at its fullest and emigrant families return for the occasion.

The two days of the festival

The structure of the festival has been consolidated for generations and remains unchanged from year to year:

  • The Novena: nine days of prayers and hymns in honor of the saint prepare the community for the solemnity.
  • The Eve of July 27th: the evening mass with invocations to the patron, followed immediately by the calata (lowering) of the silver bust from its niche, greeted by the applause of the faithful, hymns, and prayers in the presence of municipal authorities.
  • July 28th: the solemn mass with the bishop, traditionally in the late morning, and the mass in the late afternoon preceding the procession.
  • The secular program: the fair along the village streets, the collection of offerings through the town, the grand brass band concert, illuminations, and nighttime fireworks.

The procession, the heart of the festival

The pageant follows a precise order handed down over the decades: at the front, the votive candles (cinte) carried by the faithful, then the clergy, the saint's bust under the processional canopy, the municipal authorities, and finally the brass band. The route covers every area of the town, including the most peripheral districts, and can last several hours: this shared effort, accompanied by repeated prayers and sacred chants, is an integral part of the votive offering. At the end, the bust is turned toward the Calore Valley for a symbolic blessing of the entire territory, and the return to the Sanctuary is greeted by fireworks and the applause of the community.

The 2026 edition

On July 28, 2026, the solemn mass was presided over by Monsignor Antonio De Luca, Bishop of the Diocese of Teggiano-Policastro, together with the parish priest Father Antonio Costantino, before a Sanctuary crowded with faithful and visitors. The long and well-attended procession wound through the streets of the center amidst prayers and hymns; upon the statue's return, fireworks illuminated the sky of Aquara. The administration led by Mayor Antonio Marino relaunched the «Vie di San Lucido» (Paths of San Lucido) project on that occasion, designed to enhance the sites linked to the saint and strengthen the bond between faith, tradition, and local identity.

Aquara, the Alburni, and inland Campania

With just over a thousand inhabitants, a stone historic center perched on the spurs of the Alburni Mountains, and surrounding olive groves and woods, Aquara is a typical village in the Salerno hinterland, in Campania, where the patronal festival remains the main social event of the year. During the festival days, the streets fill with stalls and home kitchens serve local products: extra virgin olive oil, cheeses, cured meats, and sweets prepared for the occasion.

Why it's worth it

This is not an event built for an outside audience: it is a village festival, free and open to all, where the visitor is welcomed as a guest. Those who arrive in Aquara on July 27th or 28th will find an ancient rite still alive, the band accompanying the saint under the illuminations, the elderly reciting prayers by heart, and, in the end, the Alburni sky lit up by fireworks. It is the most authentic way to get to know this corner of the Province of Salerno.

San Lucido Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the San Lucido Patronal Festival took place in Aquara on July 27th and 28th. The highlight was the solemn mass on July 28th, presided over by Monsignor Antonio De Luca, Bishop of the Diocese of Teggiano-Policastro, with parish priest Father Antonio Costantino. The procession with the patron's silver bust moved through the village streets amidst prayers and hymns; upon returning to the Sanctuary, fireworks illuminated the Alburni sky.

Aquara celebrates its patron saint

On July 28, 2026, the community of Aquara celebrated the solemnity of San Lucido with a day of intense spirituality that drew numerous faithful and visitors, many of whom returned to the village for the occasion. The Sanctuary of San Lucido, attached to the parish church of San Nicola di Bari, was the center of the celebrations.

The solemn mass and the procession

The solemn mass was presided over by Monsignor Antonio De Luca, Bishop of the Diocese of Teggiano-Policastro, together with the parish priest Father Antonio Costantino. This was followed by a long and well-attended procession along the town streets, accompanied by prayers and sacred hymns. Fireworks and return to the Sanctuary

The return of the statue to the Sanctuary was greeted by fireworks that lit up the sky of Aquara and by the applause of the gathered community. As per tradition, the festival also included the preparatory novena, the vigil mass with the lowering of the bust from its niche, the collection of offerings through the village streets, the fair, and the brass band concert.

The «Vie di San Lucido» project

The municipal administration led by Mayor Antonio Marino reaffirmed its commitment to the «Vie di San Lucido» project during the festival, dedicated to the saint born in Aquara and designed to strengthen the bond between faith, devotion, tradition, and local identity in the Municipality of Aquara, in the Province of Salerno.
