The patron saint festival in the ceramics village at the foot of the Majella
The San Lorenzo Patronal Feast is the most anticipated summer event in Rapino, a charming village in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo, nestled at about 420 meters on the northeastern slopes of the Majella. Every year, on August 9th and 10th, the community gathers around its patron saint with a celebration that weaves religious devotion and civic festivities, following a tradition passed down through generations.
The religious heart of the festival beats in the Church of San Lorenzo Martire, a building of medieval origin renovated between the 17th and 18th centuries, which houses the statue of the saint and a 14th-century bell said to come from the destroyed monastery of San Salvatore a Majella. On August 10th, a solemn holy mass is celebrated, and the statue of San Lorenzo is carried in procession through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the prayers and songs of the faithful.
The religious events are followed by civic festivities: the square comes alive with dances, concerts, and musical shows, while lights and stalls dress the village in a festive mood. The evening culminates with a fireworks display, an event that draws residents and visitors alike every year. There is no shortage of food stands offering the flavors of Abruzzese cuisine: during the festival days, the local calendar is also enriched by the Fried Pizza Festival, one of the most beloved dishes of the local peasant tradition.
Experiencing the festival is also an opportunity to discover Rapino, a recognized center of excellence for Abruzzese hand-painted ceramics—an art form linked to master families like the Cascella and Vitacolonna—and awarded the title of City of Oil. The town, immersed in the Majella National Park, preserves a rich archaeological heritage, from the famous Dea di Rapino to the Tabula Rapinensis, and offers confectionery specialties such as the pasticcio di Rapino, made with almonds and chocolate.
The San Lorenzo Feast is part of a busy summer calendar that sees the village come alive for other religious anniversaries, such as the feast of Saints Rocco and Giovanni. In the Municipality of Rapino, between the peaks of the Majella and the craftsmanship of ancient potters, the patronal feast remains the moment when the town's identity is most vibrant and shared.
The 2026 San Lorenzo Patronal Feast in Rapino is confirmed for August 9th and 10th. As per tradition, on August 10th, a solemn holy mass will be held in the Church of San Lorenzo Martire, followed by the procession of the patron saint's statue through the streets of the village, and then civic celebrations with concerts, dancing in the square, and a fireworks display. The full program with times and artist names will be published by the organizers closer to the event.
Rapino can be reached by car from the A25 motorway (exit Pescara-Chieti or Alanno or Alanno-Scafa) by continuing towards the interior of the province of Chieti; from Chieti, drive uphill following the signs for the Majella National Park. The nearest train station is in Chieti, from where you can continue by bus.
The festival takes place every year on August 9th and 10th. Religious and civic celebrations are concentrated in the historic center and the Church of San Lorenzo Martire.
Participation in the events is free. For updated information on the program and times, it is recommended to contact the Municipality of Rapino.
