The patronal feast of Filetto

The Saint James Festival is the most cherished event of the year for Filetto, a small village of just over eight hundred inhabitants perched at an altitude of 403 meters in the countryside of the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo. Every July 25th, the entire community gathers to honor its patron saint, Saint James the Apostle (Saint James the Greater), a figure venerated throughout the Christian world and the liturgical memorial of this day.

Faith and tradition

The religious heart of the festival is the solemn Holy Mass celebrated in honor of the saint, followed by the procession that accompanies the statue of Saint James along the streets of the town's historic center. The pageant, animated by liturgical chants and the accompaniment of the band, winds through the alleys of the medieval village, touching the places most dear to local devotion. Filetto maintains a strong bond with its religious history: the territory is home to the sanctuary of the Madonna della Libera, one of the most important in the diocese of Chieti, and ancient rural churches that bear witness to centuries of popular faith.

The festival program

Surrounding the liturgical moments is a calendar of secular events organized by the Municipality of Filetto together with the parish, committees, and local associations. During the festival days, the square and the streets of the center come alive with:

• concerts and live musical performances;
• entertainment and activities for families and children;
• food stalls with traditional Abruzzese specialties;
• stalls and markets along the village streets;
• the traditional fireworks display that concludes the festivities, illuminating the sky above the town.

A village to discover

The Saint James Festival is also an opportunity to discover Filetto and its surrounding area: the medieval village, crossed by the Venna stream, is located in a hilly area just a few kilometers from Guardiagrele and the slopes of the Maiella mountains. Local traditions, furniture craftsmanship, and the genuine hospitality of the people make this patronal feast an authentic experience, far from the major tourist circuits, where the community opens its doors to visitors and pilgrims in the name of its patron saint.

When it takes place

The recurrence is set for July 25th, the day the Church celebrates Saint James the Apostle, with festivities traditionally concentrated around the patronal date.
