The grand gathering of emigrants returning home, between the Majella mountains and cherished memories

The Rapinesi of the World Festival is much more than just a summer event: it is the moment when Rapino, a village of a few thousand souls perched on the north-eastern slopes of the Majella, in the province of Chieti, reconnects with its children scattered across the globe. Since the post-war period, many Rapinesi left for Canada—where a particularly large and well-integrated community thrives in Ottawa—and for Argentina, leaving behind an unbreakable bond with their homeland.
Every summer, that bond becomes a physical presence: first-generation emigrants and their descendants cross the ocean to meet in the squares and alleys of the village, gathering before the Monument to the Rapinesi in the World, which celebrates this diaspora and the thread that unites those who stayed with those who left.
Rapino is renowned throughout Abruzzo as one of the historic centers of hand-painted ceramics, an art form passed down by master artisan families such as the Cascella and Vitacolonna. Strolling through the village during the festival means immersing oneself in this identity: the workshops, the majolica tiles, and the stone alleys overlooking the mountains provide the backdrop for a gathering that is both a family reunion and a rediscovery of one's roots.
The Rapinese community in Ottawa, gathered under the Associazione Rapinesi, keeps these traditions alive overseas and fuels the exchange with their hometown year after year: official visits, cultural twinning, and delegations that, in 2025, renewed the ties between the two shores of the Atlantic.
The day is marked by the typical rituals of homecoming: community lunches or dinners, stories shared by the elders, music, and the conviviality that enlivens the historic center. Local gastronomy is a highlight, featuring typical products from the Majella and the famous pasticcio di Rapino, a shortcrust pastry dessert filled with almonds and chocolate.
The Rapinesi of the World Festival is part of a vibrant Abruzzese summer in Rapino, alongside the patronal feast of San Lorenzo and various local food festivals, yet it retains a unique character: it is the festival of belonging, reminding every Rapinese, wherever they may live, of where they come from.
At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition of the Rapinesi of the World Festival have not yet been announced. The event, dedicated to the return of Rapinesi emigrants and their descendants from Canada, Argentina, and the rest of the world, usually takes place in the heart of summer in Rapino, in the province of Chieti. To find out the official date and program, we recommend following the channels of the Municipality of Rapino and the Associazione Rapinesi.
The festival takes place in the historic center of Rapino (CH), in the province of Chieti, a village situated at an altitude of about 420 meters on the slopes of the Majella, within the Majella National Park.
By car: take the A25 motorway exit for Alanno-Scafa or the A14 (Pescara Sud/Ortona), then follow the provincial roads towards Guardiagrele and Rapino. The village can be reached from the Val di Foro and the Guardiagrele area.
For updated dates, times, and programs, we recommend contacting the Municipality of Rapino (tel. +39 0871 84431) or following the social media channels of the Municipality and the Associazione Rapinesi.
