About Notti di San Lorenzo

Notti di San Lorenzo is one of the most evocative traveling festivals in Abruzzo, taking place every August through the alleys of the medieval historic center of Pretoro, in the province of Chieti, at the gateway to the Majella National Park. For a few evenings, the village perched on the mountain transforms into a widespread celebration: artisan markets, street performances, live music, Abruzzese cuisine, and the unmissable opportunity to watch shooting stars through a telescope. An event by Pro Loco Mirastelle that blends fine food, folk culture, and the magic of the summer sky.

Notti di San Lorenzo in Pretoro

The Notti di San Lorenzo is the most iconic summer event in Pretoro, a small village perched at an altitude of over 600 meters in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo, at the gateway to the Majella National Park. Every year, during the nights around August 10th, the medieval historic center lights up and transforms into a traveling festival that involves the entire town, drawing thousands of visitors from across the region.

A widespread celebration through the alleys

The heart of the event is the maze of alleys, stairways, and arches of the village, decorated for the occasion with lights, workshops, and stalls. Strolling through the narrow streets, you will find:

  • Artisan markets and craft workshops, promoting both traditional and modern local craftsmanship;
  • Street performances, live music of all genres, and entertainment along the entire route;
  • Art exhibitions hosted in various spaces throughout the historic center;
  • Food stalls featuring recipes from Abruzzese cuisine and typical products from the Majella area.

Shooting stars over the Majella

As the name suggests, Notti di San Lorenzo is linked to the spectacle of shooting stars, the famous "tears of Saint Lawrence" of the Perseids. During the event, an astronomical observation point with a telescope is set up, and the village's location—immersed in the mountain darkness and overlooking the Majella peaks—offers a night sky perfectly suited for gazing at the stars.

The village and the organization

The event is organized by the Pro Loco Mirastelle of Pretoro, which over the years has turned the festival into a major regional appointment dedicated to "good food, good music, beautiful landscapes, and great people." The village, famous for its numerous stairways, must be explored on foot; for this reason, the Pro Loco provides ample parking near the town and a shuttle service to reach the historic center comfortably. A recurring practical tip for visitors is to wear comfortable shoes, suitable for the climbs and cobblestones of the old village.

Why it's worth the trip

Notti di San Lorenzo is an authentic way to discover one of the most characteristic villages in the Municipality of Pretoro and the entire Abruzzo Region: folk tradition, mountain flavors, craftsmanship, and the poetry of the starry August sky blend into an experience that goes far beyond a classic village fair.

Practical information — Notti di San Lorenzo

How to get there

Pretoro is located in the province of Chieti, on the northeastern side of the Majella. During the event, the Pro Loco provides parking near the town and a shuttle service to the historic center.

Tips

Wear comfortable shoes due to the many stairways in the village. The event takes place in the evening: we recommend a light jacket for the cool mountain nights and, for those who want to observe the stars, a pair of binoculars.

The event is held every year on the nights of early August, around the feast of Saint Lawrence (August 10th).
