The procession of votive floats and the 'verginelle' in Casacanditella
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the most anticipated and well-attended celebration in Casacanditella, a small hilltop village in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. Nestled at an altitude of about 400 meters between the Foro and Dendalo river valleys, it offers views stretching from the Adriatic Sea to the Maiella mountains. Every year in mid-August, the entire community unites in Marian devotion with a festival that blends faith, rural heritage, and spectacle.
Veneration for the Madonna Assunta is rooted in a remote episode: according to local tradition, in the year 1058, a shepherd named Domenico saw the Virgin appear to him on a large oak tree, enveloped in a blinding light and a celestial gaze. The Madonna asked him to build a church dedicated to her on that spot. This event sparked the deep devotion of the village, still preserved today in the Romanesque Sanctuary of Santa Maria Assunta, the community's spiritual heart.
The most iconic element of the festival is the procession of votive floats, decorated with bay leaves, colorful ribbons, wheat, and cereals. Each float features a scene alluding to the themes of the occasion: the apparition of the Madonna, the church, and the sprouting wheat field, symbolizing the fertility of the land and gratitude for the harvest. The procession is accompanied by the verginelle, young girls dressed in white, adorned with flowers and gold jewelry, who carry basins filled with wheat balanced on their heads. It is a highly evocative tableau that unites religious sanctity with ancient Abruzzese agricultural culture.
The main day opens with a Solemn Holy Mass in the church of San Nicola, followed by a procession with the statue of the Virgin through the historic center, accompanied by hymns and a brass band. The religious dimension is complemented by a convivial atmosphere: a community lunch featuring traditional Abruzzese dishes, afternoon games for children, an evening musical performance in the square, and fireworks to close the festivities. Local food and wine specialties are abundant, from arrosticini to pasta alla chitarra, artisanal cheeses, and cured meats, all paired with regional wines.
Included in the Ferragosto festival calendar of the Chieti province, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary attracts devotees, returning emigrants, and curious visitors to Casacanditella to discover an authentic tradition. The event is organized by the Madonna dell'Assunta Festival Committee with the support of the Municipality of Casacanditella.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Assumption Day Festival in Casacanditella have not yet been officially announced. According to tradition, the festival takes place around August 14th and 15th, culminating on the day of the Assumption. As every year, the procession of votive floats decorated with bay leaves, ribbons, and cereals, the verginelle with wheat basins, the Solemn Holy Mass, and the evening festivities in the square are expected. For the official program, it is recommended to check the channels of the Municipality of Casacanditella and the Madonna dell'Assunta Festival Committee.
