The Patron Saint festival in the heart of Capurso, Puglia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the town of Capurso, just outside Bari, the San Giuseppe Patronal Festival is the most anticipated event of the year. For three days, usually at the end of May, the entire community gathers around its Patron Saint in a blend of religious rites and civic celebrations that involve all ages. It is a moment that interrupts daily life, strengthens the sense of belonging, and renews the inhabitants' bond with their roots.
The festival celebrates a specific event: on March 28, 1725, the people of Capurso publicly asked Mayor Orontio Raimundo to elect San Giuseppe as the protector of the city, which until then had San Sebastiano, San Francesco da Paola, and San Rocco as patrons, invoked in 1657 during a plague. A few days earlier, on March 1, 1725, the splendid wooden statue depicting the saint with the Baby Jesus was commissioned to Mastro Carlo Cintio Altieri of Altamura; it is still kept in the church and carried in procession during the festivities.
The spiritual heart of the festival is marked by holy masses in the Mother Church and processions: the one featuring the Painting of San Giuseppe and the solemn one of the saint's statue, accompanied by the town band and the entire population through the streets of the center. A particularly moving moment is the handing over of the city keys to the Patron Saint by the Mayor, a symbolic gesture that entrusts the community to the protection of San Giuseppe.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers the spectacle typical of major Puglian patronal feasts: illuminations that create light arches along the streets, grand brass band concerts hosted in the bandstand, musical shows in the squares, a funfair, and fireworks that close the evenings. It is a free, open-air festival, experienced intensely by residents and visitors from neighboring towns.
Located in the Bari hinterland and also known for the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Pozzo, Capurso represents an authentic example of the tradition of Puglia's patronal festivals, where popular devotion merges with brass band music, the art of illuminations, and the conviviality of the square. Participating in the San Giuseppe Festival means immersing yourself in the most genuine identity of this territory.
The Municipality of Capurso and the Patronal Festival Committee have not yet released the official calendar for the 2026 edition. The festival is traditionally held at the end of May and consists of three days of religious rites and civic celebrations. As soon as the dates and the final program are announced, this page will be updated with schedules, processions, and musical appointments.
Capurso is located about 10 km southeast of Bari. By car, it can be reached via the SS16 and the Bari ring road; by train via the Ferrovie del Sud Est line (Capurso station). The nearest airport is Bari Karol Wojtyła.
Participation in the festivities is completely free.
The processions and brass band concerts take place in the historic center and in Piazza Gramsci; it is advisable to arrive early on the main evenings to find a spot.
