A fiery tradition in the village of Conca della Campania

The San Giuseppe Bonfire is one of the most cherished celebrations in Conca della Campania, a small town in the Alto Casertano region nestled between the extinct volcano of Roccamonfina and the slopes of the Massico, in the province of Caserta, Campania. Every year, around March 19th, the community gathers around a great fire to renew an ancient ritual that marks the transition from winter to spring.

The meaning of the bonfire

Lighting a bonfire in honor of Saint Joseph is an agro-pastoral custom widespread throughout Italy, from the South to Romagna, where the fire takes on various names such as fucaruni, fogheraccia, or focarina. The large brazier, fueled by thick chestnut logs and bundles of dry branches, burns away the remnants of winter to represent a break with the past and a welcome to spring. It is a propitiatory rite that symbolizes purification, rebirth, and the hope for a good harvest in the coming season.

Music, dance, and conviviality

The evening is not just about contemplating the fire: an authentic folk festival comes to life around the flames. The program alternates folk music and dance, featuring tammurriata dancers, live accordion, and tammurriata music, followed by a DJ set that keeps the community entertained until late. It is an opportunity to rediscover the intangible heritage of the Campania region in an atmosphere of sharing among citizens, tourists, and visitors from neighboring towns.

The food and wine component, curated by the Pro Loco Conca Insieme Aps, is a highlight. The stalls offer the village's specialties:

The San Giuseppe Bonfire is a deeply participatory event: anyone who wishes can contribute by bringing wood and brushwood to fuel the fire, a collective gesture that strengthens the town's bonds. Free and held outdoors, the event takes place between Via San Nicola and Piazzale Poste, in the center of Conca della Campania, and is an ideal destination for those who want to experience the authenticity of the folk traditions of the Caserta hinterland.
