The June 24th feast and the historic fair in the heart of Lower Salento
In the municipality of Patù, a tiny village of just over 1,600 inhabitants nestled at the tip of Capo di Leuca in the province of Lecce, June 24th is a date marked on the entire community's calendar. It is the day of Saint John the Baptist, celebrated with a festival that weaves together religious devotion and popular tradition in one of the southernmost corners of Puglia and the entire Italian peninsula.
Although he is not the town's patron saint—a title held by Saint Michael the Archangel, celebrated on September 29th—Saint John the Baptist holds a special place in the hearts of the locals, thanks in part to the connection with the Church of Saint John the Baptist and the season of major summer celebrations in Lower Salento.
The religious core of the day is marked by morning Holy Masses in the church dedicated to the Saint, the solemn procession with the statue through the historic center, and the traditional brass band concert, an unmissable feature of Salento festivals, with the bandstand set up in the square. The illuminations light up the alleys, completing the festive atmosphere typical of Southern towns.
Alongside the religious festival, the Saint John the Baptist Fair takes place, one of the most folkloric market events in this Salento town. Once dedicated to the trade of livestock, textiles, and pottery, the fair still enlivens the streets today with its stalls: clothing, furniture, jewelry, handicrafts, and all kinds of goods. There is no shortage of food and wine stands, where local wines and typical dishes of Salento cuisine tell the story of the territory's rural heritage to the palate.
The Saint John festival ideally concludes an intense period of celebrations: a few days earlier, for the solemnity of Corpus Domini, Patù hosts its famous Flower Festival (Infiorata), with a long carpet of petals, leaves, and wild herbs that colors the village's main street. The floral displays remain visible until June 24th, the day of Saint John, thus uniting two traditions deeply loved by the community.
Those who reach Patù for the festival will also find a historic center rich in history: from the mysterious Centopietre, an early medieval monument, to the remains of ancient Vereto, one of the most important Messapian settlements in Salento. It is an ideal destination to combine participation in an authentic festival with the discovery of a territory still little touched by mass tourism, just a stone's throw from the sea of Leuca.
The 2026 Saint John the Baptist Festival in Patù was held on Tuesday, June 24th, the day dedicated to the Saint. The religious program included morning Holy Masses in the Church of Saint John the Baptist, the procession, and the brass band concert through the streets of the historic center.
The edition was organized directly by the parish, which collected offerings from the faithful during the celebrations, in the absence of the traditional festival committee. Local reports noted a more sober day than usual, with the fair and stalls much reduced compared to previous years.
Fair and traditional market in a reduced form. Program organized by the parish of Patù.
