Floats and masquerades in the Gallo-Italic village of San Fratello, nestled in the Nebrodi Mountains
The San Fratello Carnival is the premier carnival event in San Fratello, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily, perched at an altitude of over 600 meters on the northern slopes of the Nebrodi Park. While it is one of many village carnivals that bring the Sicilian hinterland to life in the heart of winter, it carries a unique flavor in San Fratello due to the village's history: founded in the Norman era by groups of Lombard and Piedmontese settlers, San Fratello still preserves a rare Gallo-Italic dialect, a true linguistic island that makes the town unique across the region.
The heart of the festival lies in the parades of allegorical floats and costumed groups that traverse the town center, starting from Piazza Portella. The floats, built over the preceding months by local associations and groups, parade through the streets amidst music, confetti, and great popular participation. The parades are held on multiple days, marking the entire Carnival period and involving both residents and visitors from neighboring towns in the Nebrodi area.
Alongside the tradition of the floats, the Carneval Fest offers a challenge of creative and original masks designed to engage both adults and children. It is the moment when the imagination of the locals runs wild with handmade costumes, themed groups, and meticulously crafted disguises, resulting in an explosion of color and fun that brings entire families together.
The Carnival in San Fratello has roots in ancient popular customs. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, folklorist Benedetto Rubino documented typical figures and rituals of the town: the poet-singers who recited satirical verses about local news, the ScalÃttaru, a young man who distributed oranges and sugared almonds to girls from balconies, and the Nannu, a puppet burned on Shrove Tuesday after the mocking reading of his will. These memories, intertwined with the village's Gallo-Italic culture, make the San Fratello Carnival much more than a simple parade: it is an identity-defining celebration that the community renews every year.
The event is promoted by the Pro Loco San Fratello APS together with the Municipality of San Fratello and local associations VULOS and Società Nuova Fra Militari in Congedo, with the involvement of groups, volunteers, and families from the town. Please note that this Carnival is a distinct event from the famous Festa dei Giudei of San Fratello, which takes place during Holy Week.
The 2026 edition of the San Fratello Carnival took place over three dates: Saturday, February 7, Saturday, February 14, and Tuesday, February 17, 2026, with parades starting at 4:00 PM from Piazza Portella.
The protagonists were the allegorical floats and costumed groups that paraded through the streets of San Fratello, accompanied by the Carneval Fest, a challenge of creative and original masks open to adults and children. The festival was organized by the Pro Loco San Fratello APS with the Municipality of San Fratello and the associations VULOS and Società Nuova Fra Militari in Congedo.
Throughout the period, the Carneval Fest was held, featuring a creative mask competition for all ages.
The parades start from Piazza Portella and wind through the center of San Fratello (ME), in the Nebrodi Mountains.
By car: San Fratello can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Sant'Agata di Militello exit, from where you drive inland for about 20 minutes. The reference train station is Sant'Agata di Militello, on the Tyrrhenian line; from there, you can continue by car or local connections.
The parades take place during the Carnival period, generally starting in the afternoon (from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM).
Participation in the street parades is free and open to all.
