The Santa Tecla Patronal Feast is the most cherished event in the calendar of Mirto, a small village perched in the Nebrodi Mountains, in the province of Messina. Santa Tecla, a disciple of Saint Paul and revered as one of the first Christian martyrs, is the town's patron saint. Her feast, traditionally celebrated on September 24th, is a moment of deep unity for the entire community, bringing generations together around a shared identity.
The religious heart of the event is the solemn procession of the statue of Santa Tecla through the streets of the historic center. The statue is carried on the shoulders of local young people in an atmosphere of quiet reflection and collective participation, while the Giuseppe Verdi Award-Winning Band of Mirto accompanies the parade with its symphonic marches. The day begins with a solemn Mass at the Mother Church and continues in the afternoon with the procession, culminating in a final blessing.
Beyond the spiritual dimension, the festival offers a rich entertainment program. In Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, the band performs symphonic pieces, while in the evening, the square comes alive with live music, food stalls, and convivial moments that draw both residents and those returning home for the occasion. In recent years, the festival has hosted performances by various artists and musical groups, creating vibrant, well-attended evenings.
The festivities traditionally conclude with a raffle and a fireworks display, which light up the Nebrodi sky and seal a day of faith and celebration for the entire community.
Visiting the Santa Tecla Feast is also an opportunity to discover Mirto and its surroundings: a village in the Nebrodi Mountains immersed in a landscape of forests and hills, where the religious and folk traditions of Sicily remain intact. The patronal feast remains one of the defining events of the province of Messina, symbolizing the deep bond between the town and its patron saint.
