The September festival in the Grazia district of San Salvatore di Fitalia

The Madonna delle Grazie Festival is one of the most cherished events in the religious calendar of San Salvatore di Fitalia, a small village in the Metropolitan City of Messina, tucked away in the Nebrodi mountains of Sicily. The celebration revolves around the church in the Grazia district, which houses the venerated image of the Madonna, a focal point of devotion that has guided the local community for generations.
The festival is traditionally held on the third Sunday of September, with celebrations spanning both Saturday and Sunday. In 2025, the festivities took place on Saturday, September 20th, and Sunday, September 21st, while in 2024 they fell on September 14th and 15th: the date follows the liturgical calendar and shifts slightly from year to year.
The heart of the festival lies in its solemn processions. On Sunday, following the High Mass, the statue of the Madonna is carried in procession to the Santuzza district in the morning, while in the afternoon, the religious parade reaches the Scrisera district. It is a moment of profound spiritual intensity that winds through the countryside and districts of the Fitalia territory.
Every year, the festival attracts hundreds of pilgrims, many arriving from the neighboring towns of Galati Mamertino and Tortorici. Some reach the Grazia district church on foot, traversing the Nebrodi trails as an act of faith and personal vow, in a ritual that renews ancient bonds between the communities of the Messina mountains.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers recreational evenings that bring the village to life: dialect theater performances, live music, and moments of conviviality. In recent years, the program has included lighthearted comedies by local amateur troupes and concerts, showcasing how the festival weaves together popular tradition and social life.
As noted by the municipal administration, the Madonna delle Grazie Festival remains "a reference point for the identity and collective memory of the territory." In a small Nebrodi town like San Salvatore di Fitalia, the September event represents not only a moment of faith but also an opportunity to reconnect, welcome those returning to the village, and preserve the traditions of a community tenaciously linked to its roots.
At the moment, no official dates have been published for the 2026 edition of the Madonna delle Grazie Festival in San Salvatore di Fitalia. In line with tradition, the celebration is held on the third Sunday of September, spanning Saturday and Sunday. The final program, including times for processions and performances, is usually released by the Festival Committee in the weeks leading up to the event.
The festivities are centered around the church in the Grazia district and along the processional routes toward the Santuzza and Scrisera districts, in the territory of San Salvatore di Fitalia (ME), in the Nebrodi mountains.
San Salvatore di Fitalia can be reached by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (exit Brolo-Capo d'Orlando), then heading inland into the Nebrodi. The nearest train station is Brolo-Ficarra, on the Tyrrhenian line.
Participation in religious celebrations and performances is free of charge.
