In the heart of the Nebrodi Mountains, at an altitude of 450 meters, the medieval village of Ficarra in the province of Messina preserves one of the most heartfelt Christmas traditions in the region. During the holidays, the town's ancient districts come alive with "Nativity Scenes in the Neighborhoods", a widespread exhibition that turns alleys, courtyards, stone staircases, and hidden corners of the historic center into intimate scenes of the Nativity.
Promoted by the Municipality of Ficarra, the event has reached its 21st edition: a longevity that has made it a deeply rooted part of the town's identity and the Nebrodi Christmas calendar.
The heart of the event lies in the artisanal nativity scenes crafted by the residents of the village's various districts. Each neighborhood participates by setting up its own display, creating a trail that invites residents and visitors to walk through the historic center to discover the various works. Simple materials, ingenuity, and folk creativity combine in displays that highlight the stone, wood, and traditional architecture of the town.
The event is part of a broader program of Christmas festivities that the Municipality of Ficarra offers between December and Epiphany, which also includes the evocative Living Nativity among the village alleys, Christmas concerts, and events dedicated to families. It is the perfect opportunity to discover a village known as the "village of scattered museums," with a strong medieval character, devoted to Maria SS. Annunziata and surrounded by the forests of the Nebrodi.
Visiting the nativity scenes is accompanied by the typical flavors of the Ficarra holidays, including the buccellato ficarrese, a traditional local Christmas pastry, and the gastronomic specialties of the Nebrodi.
"Nativity Scenes in the Neighborhoods" is a free, open-air event designed to be experienced by strolling leisurely through the streets of the village. It is an authentic way to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a Sicilian Christmas, far from the crowds of mass tourism, in one of the most characteristic centers in the province of Messina.
The Municipality of Ficarra has not yet published the official calendar for the 2026-2027 edition of "Nativity Scenes in the Neighborhoods". As this is an annual, multi-decade event, it is expected to take place as usual during the Christmas period, with nativity scenes set up by residents in the historic center's districts. We recommend checking dates and the program on the Municipality's official channels as the holidays approach.
