The patronal feast of the Rocca di Capri Leone district, blending faith, tradition, and music

The Madonna del Rosario Festival is the patronal feast of the Rocca di Capri Leone district, a village overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea in the municipality of Capri Leone, in the province of Messina (Sicily). Every year in October, the small local community gathers around its protector, the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary, in a celebration that combines deep popular religiosity with shared festive moments.
The religious heart of the festival is the Church of Maria Santissima del Rosario, an early 20th-century building housing a fine wooden triptych depicting the Madonna of the Rosary with the Child, flanked by Saint Catherine and Saint Dominic. The sacred program marks the days with the recitation of the Rosary, Holy Mass, and, at the climax, the solemn procession of the statue of the Madonna, which travels through the village streets accompanied by the faithful. The festival is often enriched by the pastoral visit of the Bishop of the Diocese of Patti, a sign of the deep bond between Rocca and its patron saint.
Alongside the religious rites, the festival offers a rich secular program that primarily animates Piazza Gepy Faranda: concerts, musical evenings, cabaret shows, and entertainment for all ages. As per tradition, the event concludes with fireworks that light up the sky above the Rocca, greeted with enthusiasm by the local population and numerous visitors from the surrounding Nebrodi towns.
For the inhabitants of Rocca di Capri Leone, the Madonna del Rosario Festival is much more than a religious recurrence: it is a gathering point where families reunite and many emigrants return to their native village. A tradition that renews, year after year, the identity and sense of community of this corner of the Tyrrhenian Sicily, nestled between the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Tindari and the Nebrodi hills.
The program for the 2026 edition of the Madonna del Rosario Festival in Rocca di Capri Leone has not yet been published. Based on tradition, the celebrations will be held in October and will include the usual religious events (recitation of the Rosary, Holy Mass, and the procession of the Madonna through the district streets) accompanied by musical evenings in Piazza Gepy Faranda and traditional fireworks. Dates and the full program will be announced by the Maria SS. del Rosario Parish.
The festival takes place in the district of Rocca di Capri Leone (Municipality of Capri Leone, province of Messina, postal code 98070), with the religious center at the Church of Maria SS. del Rosario and performances held in Piazza Gepy Faranda and Piazzetta Mons. Caputo.
By car: A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, take the Brolio-Capo d'Orlando exit, then follow the SS113 towards Capri Leone. By train: Capri Leone station on the Messina-Palermo Tyrrhenian line. Rocca di Capri Leone is the coastal district of the municipality.
Access to all celebrations and shows is free.
