About Saint Sebastian Summer

Every first Sunday of August, Pagliara, a small village in the Agrò Valley on the Ionian coast of Messina, pays tribute to its patron saint, Saint Sebastian, with a summer festival. It is the second celebration dedicated to the Saint, following the winter feast on January 20th: a day of strong community identity, marked by the solemn procession of the martyr's statue through the historic center, religious services, evening entertainment in the square, and the traditional fireworks that close the event. A heartfelt occasion that draws many emigrant 'Pagliarini' back to their hometown.

The Saint Sebastian Summer Festival in Pagliara

In the heart of the Agrò Valley, overlooking the Ionian coast of north-eastern Sicily, the small municipality of Pagliara (province of Messina) preserves one of the most deeply rooted traditions in its calendar: the Saint Sebastian Summer Festival, the town's patron saint. Unlike the liturgical feast on January 20th, this celebration takes place every year on the first Sunday of August and represents one of the most significant moments of identity and participation for the entire community.

Two feasts for one patron saint

Saint Sebastian is venerated in Pagliara with two distinct celebrations: the winter one on January 20th, linked to the liturgical date of his martyrdom, and the summer one on the first Sunday of August. The summer festival, held at the height of the season, has taken on a special value over time: it is the moment when the village gathers in full, thanks in part to the return of numerous emigrant Pagliarini who take advantage of their holidays to return to their place of origin and participate in the celebrations.

The procession and the cult of the Saint

The heart of the day is the solemn procession: the statue of Saint Sebastian is carried on the shoulders of devotees along the streets of the historic center of Pagliara, among stone buildings and village alleys, accompanied by the faithful, the brass band, and the prayers of the community. The cult of the Saint, deeply felt, is linked to the religious history of the town and its church dedicated to the martyr, part of the rich devotional heritage of the Messina territory.

Entertainment and fireworks

Alongside the religious dimension, the summer festival offers its most festive and popular side: on the evenings of the celebrations, the town center comes alive with musical performances and entertainment in the square, while the grand finale is entrusted to the traditional fireworks displays that light up the sky over the Agrò Valley, greeted by the enthusiasm of those present.

Pagliara and the Agrò Valley

A village of just over a thousand inhabitants, Pagliara is known for its production of olive oil and wine and for its stone vistas. Nestled between the sea and the hills, a short distance from the Ionian coast and the centers of the Messina Riviera, the town offers visitors the chance to discover an authentic, non-touristy Sicily, where patronal festivals remain a pillar of collective identity. The Saint Sebastian Summer Festival is the ideal opportunity to experience this atmosphere, amidst faith, tradition, and conviviality.
