The Patronal Feast of the Madonna Assunta is the most anticipated event of the year for Nizza di Sicilia, a small coastal town in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily, overlooking the Ionian Sea between the slopes of the Peloritani mountains and the coastline facing Taormina. Maria Santissima Assunta is the heavenly patroness and perpetual protector of the community: her feast, celebrated a few days before the liturgical solemnity of August 15th, transforms the town into a place of prayer, gathering, and sharing.
For the people of Nizza, devotion to the Assunta is rooted in the town's very history, as the Mother Church is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta. The feast is a moment when the community rediscovers the bond between spirituality and local identity: emigrants return, families reunite, and confraternities and the faithful accompany the statue of the Virgin with Marian hymns and a brass band. Alongside the patroness, the town also venerates Saint Joseph, the co-patron celebrated in the spring.
The main day revolves around two highlights: the solemn mass in the morning at the Mother Church, attended by civil and religious authorities, and the solemn procession of the statue in the late afternoon, which winds through the town center amidst the moving participation of the devotees. Upon returning to the church, the Virgin bestows a blessing upon the city from the top of the staircase, one of the most emotional moments of the celebration.
Once the religious part concludes, the feast takes on a popular character: musical and entertainment shows liven up the square until late at night, while the grand finale is entrusted to fireworks that reflect off the Ionian Sea from the seafront, drawing residents and visitors from the entire area. It is the perfect opportunity to experience the summer atmosphere of an authentic Sicilian seaside village, amidst spirituality, gastronomy, and social life.
Included in the rich calendar of summer patronal feasts in the province of Messina, the Feast of the Assunta in Nizza di Sicilia represents a significant stop for those wishing to discover the most authentic side of Sicily, where religious traditions are experienced with intensity and the warmth of small coastal communities.
Festivities in honor of the Madonna Assunta, patroness of Nizza di Sicilia (Metropolitan City of Messina), will return in the summer of 2026. At the moment, the dates and official program have not yet been published: following custom, the feast should take place in the days around August 15th, with a solemn mass in the Mother Church, the solemn procession of the statue, and the concluding fireworks on the seafront. To find out the final calendar, it is recommended to consult the official channels of the Santa Maria Assunta and San Giuseppe Parish.
The feast takes place in the center of Nizza di Sicilia (ME), with its focal point at the Santa Maria Assunta Mother Church; the procession travels through the town streets, and the final fireworks display is held along the seafront.
By car: A18 Messina-Catania motorway, exit at Roccalumera-Nizza di Sicilia, then follow the SS114. By train: the Nizza di Sicilia station is on the Ionian railway line between Messina, Catania, and Syracuse. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa.
Admission to all events is free. It is recommended to check the official channels of the Santa Maria Assunta and San Giuseppe Parish for the updated program and final schedules.
