The Patronal Feast of Antillo

In the heart of the Peloritani Mountains, in the province of Messina, the small town of Antillo gathers every year around its patron saint, Santa Maria della Provvidenza. It is the village's most deeply felt celebration, observed on August 22nd for over two centuries with sincere devotion and great participation from the faithful. It is an event that draws not only residents but also many Antillesi who have emigrated, returning during these days to keep their bond with the community and their roots alive.

The Vara and the Procession

The most anticipated moment is the exit of the Vara, the processional float carrying the Sacred Image of the Madonna. When the statue is placed on the portal of the Mother Church, the square fills with devotees who acclaim the patron saint with the traditional cry in the local dialect: «Evviva S. Maria di la Pruvvidenza». At that moment, balloons in the colors of the statue's mantle—blue, pink, and white—are released into the sky, while the sound of musketry and firecrackers echoes through the air.

The religious procession, accompanied by the local 'Vincenzo Bellini' Marching Band, traverses the main streets of the village, including Via Cesare Battisti, Via Messina, Via Roma, and Via Europa, reaching the hamlets and neighborhoods of Antillo. The Vara is carried on the shoulders of the faithful along the entire route, greeted in every district by cheers and traditional firecrackers, in an atmosphere that blends popular faith with Peloritani folklore.

'U giocu focu' at the Acquavena Fountain

Upon the return of the statue to the church in the evening, the festival concludes with a fireworks display, known in the local dialect as 'u giocu focu'. The faithful head toward the Acquavena fountain and other panoramic viewpoints in the area to watch the fireworks illuminate the valley and the surrounding mountains, a scenic seal on a day of devotion and community.
