The patronal feast of Graniti, in the heart of the Alcantara Valley
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Saint Sebastian Patronal Feast is the most anticipated event on the calendar in Graniti, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Messina, nestled on the slopes of the Alcantara Valley in Sicily. Every year, on the first Sunday of August, the entire village gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that blends faith, folk tradition, and local festivities.
The devotion of the people of Graniti to Saint Sebastian has ancient roots: the first traces of a chapel dedicated to the Saint date back to the mid-14th century, a sign of a bond that has been passed down uninterruptedly from generation to generation to the present day.
The celebrations begin with the statue emerging from the Church of Saint Sebastian, which overlooks the square of the same name in the heart of the village. The moment is marked by the fireworks of master pyrotechnicians, who salute both the departure and the return of the Saint. The procession then continues along the streets and characteristic alleys of the historic center, carried on the shoulders of the Bearers of Saint Sebastian, while the community accompanies the parade in prayer.
Alongside the religious aspect, marked by solemn masses, the feast is also an opportunity for the entire community and the many visitors who reach the village in summer to meet, drawn by the genuine atmosphere of a Sicilian patronal feast.
Although the main patronal feast takes place on the first Sunday of August, Graniti also honors its patron on January 20th, the liturgical day of Saint Sebastian, when a traditional mercantile fair is held on the nearest Sunday.
Visiting the Saint Sebastian Feast is also an opportunity to discover Graniti and its territory: an authentic village in the province of Messina, known for its murals and its proximity to the famous Alcantara Gorges. The feast represents one of the most sincere faces of the Sicilian summer, far from the large tourist flows.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Sebastian Patronal Feast in Graniti has not yet been officially scheduled. Following tradition, the celebrations should take place on the first Sunday of August, with the customary procession of the statue from the Church of Saint Sebastian and the fireworks. The detailed program will be communicated by the Municipality of Graniti in the weeks preceding the event.
Graniti is located in the Alcantara Valley, in the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached from the A18 Messina-Catania motorway (Giardini Naxos exit), then going up the Alcantara valley. The nearest train station is Giardini-Naxos, on the Messina-Syracuse line.
The patronal feast takes place every year on the first Sunday of August. A second celebration, with a mercantile fair, is held on the Sunday closest to January 20th.
Participation in the feast and the procession is free.
