The patronal feast of Mandanici, blending faith and tradition in the hills of Messina

In Mandanici, a municipality of just over two hundred souls perched in the hills of the Province of Messina, Sicily, the cult of Saint Domenica Ciriaca marks the year with two distinct and deeply felt events. The first is the liturgical feast on July 6th, the day of the Saint's martyrdom: after the preparatory novena, a solemn Eucharist is celebrated, followed by an evocative candlelight procession through the village streets with the relic of Saint Domenica. The second is the external summer feast, held on a Sunday in August, which represents the most popular and well-attended moment of the entire village calendar.
The heart of the summer festival is the solemn procession of the precious 17th-century statue of the Saint, an artistic masterpiece from the 1600s carried on shoulders through the narrow streets of the village. The procession is enlivened by the sound of a brass band, songs, and prayers, and concludes with traditional fireworks. The date of the external feast is also chosen to allow the many Mandanici emigrants to return to their native town and reunite during the days of the patron saint.
Saint Domenica was born in Tropea, Calabria, towards the end of the 3rd century to Christian parents. During the persecutions of Diocletian, she suffered numerous torments without ever renouncing her faith and was condemned to beheading on July 6, 303. Her cult reached Mandanici thanks to the Basilian monks of the Abbey of Santa Maria Annunziata, founded around the year 1100. In 1737, the Bishop of Tropea donated to the community a silver reliquary containing a fragment of the column to which the Saint was scourged, which is still kept in the Cathedral of Mandanici today.
Since 2023, Mandanici has been part of the Network of Cities of Saint Domenica, Virgin and Martyr of Tropea, officially established in Scorrano, which brings together thirteen municipalities across Puglia, Campania, Calabria, and Sicily, united by their devotion to the young martyr. In May 2024, the votive lamp of Saint Domenica reached Mandanici as part of a traveling pilgrimage, welcomed with a procession from the town hall to the church and a Pentecost celebration. An initiative that enhances the religious traditions of the territory and promotes religious tourism among the participating communities.
At the moment, the parish of Mandanici has not yet published the detailed calendar for the 2026 edition. Following tradition, the liturgical feast should fall on July 6th, the day of Saint Domenica, with the solemn Eucharist and the candlelight procession of the relic; the external feast, with the procession of the precious 17th-century statue accompanied by the band and fireworks, should take place on a Sunday in August. The complete program will be announced by the parish and the Municipality in the weeks leading up to the event.
Mandanici is located in the Peloritani mountains, in the Province of Messina. By car, it can be reached from the A18 Messina-Catania motorway, taking the Nizza di Sicilia or Roccalumera exit, then continuing inland along the provincial road that climbs to the village. The nearest train station is Nizza di Sicilia, on the Ionian coastal line.
The liturgical feast is celebrated on July 6th; the external feast with the procession of the statue is held on a Sunday in August. It is advisable to verify the exact dates with the parish or the Municipality, as they vary from year to year.
Participation in the celebrations and the procession is free and open to all.
