The festival is part of a evocative triduum that marks mid-August in Limina, drawing back families and emigrants who return for the summer: August 14th celebrates Saint Sebastian, the town's patron saint; August 15th is the day of the Madonna delle Preghiere; and August 16th concludes the festivities with the solemn feast of Saint Philip of Agira, the protector saint. Three days of faith and community that transform the village every year, bringing Liminesi back from Milan, Frankfurt, New York, and Caracas.
The procession and the float
The central moment of August 15th is the procession of the Madonna's statue through the streets of the historic center. The effigy, depicting the Virgin with the Child in a gesture of supplication, is carried on an antique wooden float dating back to 1860, a piece of great devotional value that has been recently restored. The cult has its roots in the town's ancient history: the Madonna delle Preghiere is linked to the old Jewish quarter, the Giudecca ("A Judeca"), where a church dedicated to her stood as early as the 14th century.

How to get there
Limina can be reached by car from the A18 Messina-Catania motorway (Roccalumera or Taormina exit), continuing inland along the provincial roads of the Ionian-Messina area. The nearest train station is Santa Teresa di Riva-Savoca-Sant'Alessio, on the Messina-Catania line, from where you can continue by car or local connections.
