August 7th is the most significant date of the year in Contursi Terme, a town in the Province of Salerno, Campania, perched on a hill overlooking the Sele Valley at an altitude of about 250 meters. On this day, the community celebrates San Donato, bishop and martyr, with a festival that weaves together liturgy, popular devotion, and social conviviality. The celebration is organized by the local parish in collaboration with the Municipality of Contursi Terme and is open to all residents and the many visitors who frequent the valley's thermal baths during the summer.
The element that makes the Contursi Terme feast truly unique in the Campanian landscape is the paraliturgical ritual of the 'pesatura' (weighing). A large wooden scale is set up in the Mother Church: a child or a sick person is placed on one side, while sacks of grain are added to the other until the weight is matched. The grain remains as an offering to the saint, while the priest invokes the intercession of San Donato through traditional prayers.
This is an ancient votive act of exchange, historically linked to protection against epileptic seizures, for which San Donato is traditionally invoked as a protector. The practice is documented by ethnographic studies on the cult of Donato, which record its survival in only a few locations in Central and Southern Italy, including Contursi Terme. In the 1990s, over twenty sacks of grain were recorded being brought to the church in a single day. An image of the martyr was traditionally placed on the scale to signify its sacred destination.
In the late afternoon, traditionally starting at 7:00 PM, the statue of the patron saint is carried in procession through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the parish community and the faithful. Alongside the statue, the 'cente' are paraded—votive structures shaped like boats, decorated with candles, wheat stalks, and colorful ribbons, which women carry balanced on their heads. This agricultural symbolism links the festival to the summer harvest cycle. Another local custom is the blessing of the abitini, small scapulars with sacred images pinned to children's clothing as a sign of protection.
Once the religious ceremony concludes, the festival moves to the center of town, around Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi, taking on the atmosphere of a local village fair. The evening program typically includes:
Participation is free and open to all: there is no entry fee.
Visitors arriving for the feast will discover a town whose identity is deeply rooted in its waters: the thermal springs of Contursi were already known to Pliny the Elder in the 1st century AD and still feed the valley's spa facilities today. The historic center preserves the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, which houses a fine statue of the Madonna and Child sculpted in Venice in 1515, and the 18th-century church dedicated to San Donato. August 7th is the perfect opportunity to combine a day at the spa, the discovery of the village, and participation in one of the most authentic patronal feasts in the Campanian hinterland.
The event is held annually on August 7th, the liturgical feast day of the patron saint, and follows the same structure every year: the morning and afternoon are dedicated to celebrations in the Mother Church and the weighing ritual, while the evening is dedicated to the procession and public festivities. The detailed program for each edition is released by the parish and municipal offices closer to the date.
At the time of writing, no official program has been published for the 2026 edition of the San Donato Patronal Feast in Contursi Terme. However, the feast is a fixed event in the local calendar, linked to the patron saint's liturgical day, and is organized every year by the parish community and the Municipality.
Those wishing to attend can consult the official website of the Municipality of Contursi Terme or contact the municipal offices directly (+39 0828 991013) in the weeks prior, when the schedule of celebrations, the procession route, and evening events in the square will be announced.
By car: take the Contursi exit on the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway (about 2.5 km from the town center); alternatively, use the Sicignano degli Alburni exit, just over 6 km away. The historic center is mostly closed to traffic during the procession: it is recommended to leave your car in the peripheral parking areas and continue on foot.
By train: the nearest train station is Eboli, about 16 km away, connected to Contursi Terme by bus lines and taxis.
Free admission to all religious and public celebrations. Tastings of local products are organized by independent stalls in the center.
Contursi Terme offers a good range of accommodation related to the Sele Valley thermal sector (hotels with wellness centers, B&Bs, farmhouses). In high season, during August, it is advisable to book in advance.
