Three days of devotion and popular tradition in the ancient town of Volcei
Every year, at the end of August, the village of Buccino celebrates the Santa Croce Festival, an event that concludes the extensive summer program of the Municipality of Buccino. Located in the upper Sele Valley, in the province of Salerno, within the hinterland of Campania, this town of just over five thousand inhabitants is perched at an altitude of 663 meters, preserving the intact perimeter of the ancient Lucanian and later Roman city of Volcei.
The festival is not a tourist-driven invention; it is a genuine local tradition, experienced by Buccino families and those returning in August from northern cities or abroad. Celebrations are concentrated in the historic center, where narrow streets and stone portals provide a natural backdrop for religious rites and convivial gatherings.
For 2026, the Municipality has scheduled the Santa Croce celebrations from August 22 to 24. The festival arrives at the end of a packed summer season—ranging from the Percoca Peach Festival in late July to the Volcei Beer Fest, the "A' la Chiazza" folk music series, and the White Night in mid-August—and precedes the Madonna del Carmine Festival on August 29 and 30, which officially closes the village's summer season.
The devotional focus is the parish church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, one of the village's historic places of worship, nestled within the medieval fabric of the center. The title recalls the liturgical feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, one of the oldest in the Christian calendar, which tradition links to the finding of the relic by Saint Helena. In Buccino, as in many towns in the Campanian hinterland, this devotion has taken on a summer timing: August is when the village is most populated and the community can fully reunite.
It should be noted that the patron saint of Buccino is Mary Most Holy Immaculate, celebrated with great solemnity on the first Sunday of July with processions, a brass band concert, the Palio della Cuccagna, and fireworks. Santa Croce is therefore the second major event of the Volceian summer: more intimate, but no less heartfelt.
The detailed program is usually released by the Festival Committee and the Municipality in the days immediately preceding the event through official channels and posters displayed in town.
Visitors arriving for the festival will find much more than just an evening in the square. Buccino is a true urban archaeological park: the medieval center perfectly overlaps the ancient city, sharing the same wall perimeter and street layout. Must-see sites include the "Marcello Gigante" National Archaeological Museum, housed in the former Eremitani di Sant'Agostino convent, which chronicles the territory from the 3rd millennium BC to the Romanization, and the evocative Eremitani Cloister, which hosts many summer events. The castle and Roman-era remains complete an itinerary that spans three thousand years of history in just a few hundred meters.
The municipal administration presents the summer calendar as a tool to combine entertainment for residents with the attraction of tourist flows, highlighting the historical, cultural, and gastronomic peculiarities of the Volceian community. The Santa Croce Festival is perhaps its most authentic example: no grand productions, just the ability of a town in the Salerno hinterland to gather around a shared tradition during the most beautiful evenings of the Campanian August.
The Santa Croce celebrations are scheduled from August 22 to 24, 2026. The date is confirmed by the official summer program of the Municipality of Buccino, released at the end of June and spanning from mid-June to the final days of August.
The festival is part of the final section of the calendar, specifically dedicated to the charm of the historic center: following the "Note di Wine – Latin Salsa Night" on August 16 and before the Madonna del Carmine Festival on August 29 and 30, which officially closes the Volceian summer with live performances and folk music.
At the time of writing, the detailed schedule of times and evening events has not yet been published; it will be released by the Festival Committee and the parish in the days immediately preceding the event.
Buccino can be reached by car via the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, taking the Sicignano degli Alburni exit and continuing on the Sicignano–Potenza motorway link until the exit for the town. By train, the reference station is located in the Buccino Scalo area, on the Battipaglia–Potenza line, a few kilometers from the historic center. The nearest airport is Salerno–Costa d'Amalfi.
During the festival, the old town is pedestrianized: it is best to leave your car in the parking areas on the outskirts of the center and walk up, keeping in mind the steepness of the streets.
All festival events are free and open to the public. Any tastings or food stalls are paid for on-site.
