The village of lovers in Alta Irpinia: minstrels, balconies, and love songs
Every summer, in mid-August, the historic center of Teora—a small town in the Alta Irpinia area, in the Province of Avellino, Campania—transforms into the "village of lovers." For one night, the Serenade Festival stages an ancient custom widespread throughout Southern Italy: the declaration of love sung beneath the beloved's balcony, accompanied by local minstrels. This is not a postcard-perfect reconstruction, but a tradition that has remained alive in Teora's collective memory, which the community has chosen to share in the form of a festival.
The event was born in the early 2000s—the 2025 edition marked its twenty-second year—driven by the local singer Gerardino Lardieri and the group "Voci da Teora," to whom the festival dedicated an edition and a book of musical memories. Today, the artistic direction is led by Mara Casciano, a local artist who inherited the role, while the organization is managed by the Municipality of Teora in collaboration with the Pro Loco, the Misericordia, and local associations. The festival is one of the most anticipated events of the municipal summer calendar "Teora R...Estate," which fills the village with festivals, concerts, tournaments, and charity evenings from late June to mid-August.
The festival is itinerant: you walk along the main street and stop beneath the balconies, where serenade scenes ignite by surprise, one after another. The route culminates in Piazza XX Settembre, the viewpoint that locals call the "balcony of Irpinia" for its open view of the mountains, and at Largo Europa, where the final show takes place.
The serenade is one of the last musical courtship rituals surviving in Southern Italy, and this is precisely what makes the Teora event different from a common summer evening: the audience in the square does not watch a stage, but follows a story that moves from house to house. The involvement is intergenerational—in recent editions, the "first serenade" was performed by children from the local primary and middle schools—and the event also serves as a homecoming occasion for Teora emigrants, who fill the village in August.
Teora is a small town of just over 1,400 inhabitants, overlooking the valleys of Alta Irpinia, in an inland area of Campania characterized by villages, vineyards, and ridge roads. The festival is therefore also a great excuse to discover a territory off the beaten path of mass tourism, located a short distance from other Alta Irpinia centers and their summer events. Those arriving for the serenade evening will find the rest of the municipal mid-August calendar in the following days, featuring food festivals, free concerts, and fireworks.
The event is traditionally scheduled in the days leading up to Ferragosto (August 15th): August 12 in 2026, August 11 in 2025. Admission is free and participation does not require reservations: just show up in town and let the music guide you along the main street.
The date is official: Wednesday, August 12, 2026, from 9:00 PM, the Serenade Festival returns to enliven the historic center of Teora, in the Province of Avellino. The confirmation comes from the "Teora R...Estate 2026" calendar published by the Municipality and featured on the Province's Sistema Irpinia portal.
The formula remains the proven one: a walking route along the main street, with serenade scenes igniting by surprise beneath the balconies, and the finale in Piazza XX Settembre and Largo Europa. As per tradition, the names of the minstrels and musical guests are not disclosed in advance: the surprise is part of the game. The artistic direction is entrusted again this year to Teora native Mara Casciano, in continuity with the work started by Gerardino Lardieri.
The festival falls during the most intense week of the town's summer, which concludes with the free Ferragosto concert and fireworks. Admission to the evening is free and no reservation is required.
The 2026 edition of the Serenade Festival is set for Wednesday, August 12, starting at 9:00 PM, in the historic center of Teora: as indicated by the official "Teora R...Estate 2026" calendar of the Municipality, featured on the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino. The details of the scenes, minstrels, and musical guests have not yet been released: as per tradition, most of the serenades remain a surprise until the evening itself.
The festival takes place during the peak week of the Teora summer:
The festival is itinerant throughout the historic center of Teora (AV): the main street, Piazza XX Settembre—the so-called "balcony of Irpinia"—and Largo Europa, where the Town Hall is located (Largo Europa 8, 83056 Teora).
Teora is located in the hinterland of the Province of Avellino, in Alta Irpinia: the most convenient way to reach it is by car, arriving via the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway and the Alta Irpinia state roads. The reference airport is Naples-Capodichino. Evening public transport connections are limited: it is best to organize your return by car after the evening.
Free admission. In 2026, the festival is scheduled for Wednesday, August 12, starting at 9:00 PM; in previous editions, food stalls opened from 8:00 PM and the first serenades began around 8:30 PM.
Bring comfortable shoes: the route is on foot, with ups and downs along the main street and the village alleys. It is advisable to arrive a little early to find a spot in Piazza XX Settembre, where the audience gathers. For updated information: Municipality of Teora, tel. +39 0827 51005.
There are few accommodation facilities in Teora: those staying for several days can look for farmhouses (agriturismi) and bed & breakfasts in other Alta Irpinia towns, all a short drive away.
