The patronal feast of Gliaca di Piraino, blending faith, sea, and Nebrodi traditions
The San Cataldo Festival is the main religious celebration in the seaside village of Gliaca di Piraino, on the Tyrrhenian side of the Nebrodi mountains, in the municipality of Piraino, province of Messina. An Irish-born bishop who lived in the 7th century and is venerated throughout Southern Italy, San Cataldo is celebrated here in mid-May over two days that unite the faith of the parish community, under the Diocese of Patti, with the village's popular traditions.
Festivities begin in the days leading up to the event with the recitation of the Holy Rosary, the Chaplet, and Holy Masses in the church. The most heartfelt moment of the eve is the procession with the Saint's relic, which travels along Via del Sole and Via del Mare to the waterfront, where a Mass is celebrated with the evocative blessing of the sea, a rite dear to a community historically tied to fishing. The evening continues with a convivial gathering and a traditional tasting of pennette in honor of the patron saint, accompanied by music.
On the main day, the morning is dedicated to Holy Mass and the blessing of laurel branches, a symbol linked to the devotion to San Cataldo. In the afternoon, Piazza Quasimodo hosts the historic Orange Squeezing Competition, a fun popular challenge now in its many editions that highlights the territory's connection to its citrus agriculture. In the evening, the arrival of the "V. Bellini" Musical Band of Sinagra announces the solemn Mass, sung by the parish choir, followed by the procession of the statue through the town streets.
Upon the return of the statue to the church, the festival concludes with a fireworks display overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. The San Cataldo Festival is one of the defining events for Gliaca and the entire municipality of Piraino: an occasion where devotion, music, gastronomy, and community life merge into a weekend that attracts locals, returning emigrants, and visitors to the Nebrodi area.
For the 2026 edition, the Diocese of Patti accompanied the festivities in Gliaca di Piraino with a parish mission that culminated on the eve of Saturday, May 17, with a procession, blessing of the sea, and the presentation of the votive candle.
On the day of the festival, Sunday, May 18, the usual schedule was followed: morning Holy Mass with the blessing of laurel branches, in the afternoon the Orange Squeezing Competition in Piazza Quasimodo, the arrival of the "V. Bellini" Musical Band of Sinagra, the solemn Mass sung by the parish choir, the procession of the statue through the village streets, and fireworks over the sea to close the day.
The festival is held in the village of Gliaca di Piraino (Postal Code 98060), province of Messina, with events taking place in the church, on the waterfront, and in Piazza Quasimodo.
By car from the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, take the Brolo-Capo d'Orlando exit, then the SS113 towards Gioiosa Marea. By train, the Gioiosa Marea station on the Tyrrhenian line is just a few kilometers away.
Mid-May, over two days (the eve and the patron saint's day). Free admission to all events.
