A district feast in the heart of the Nebrodi

The Sausage Sandwich Festival is the convivial highlight accompanying the Feast of Maria SS. del Soccorso, celebrated annually in Contrada Soccorso, a district of the municipality of Sant'Angelo di Brolo, in the province of Messina. Nestled among the peaks of the Nebrodi Park, this small Sicilian village enjoys two days of festivities in the height of summer, blending popular devotion with the genuine flavors of rural tradition.

Between the sacred and the profane

The feast originates from the cult of the Madonna del Soccorso and is marked, as per Sicilian tradition, by religious moments — the liturgical celebration and the procession through the streets of the district — and by the recreational activities that enliven the evenings. The culinary heart of the event is the festival itself: food stalls where the absolute star is the sausage sandwich grilled over charcoal, a symbol of local village cuisine, accompanied by craft beer and typical products from the Nebrodi territory.

Music, grills, and conviviality

As evening falls, the district fills with long tables, the scent of grilled meat, and live musical entertainment. It is a popular feast in its most authentic form: an opportunity for the inhabitants of Sant'Angelo di Brolo, for emigrants returning to their hometown for Ferragosto, and for visitors to discover the hospitality of the Nebrodi. To facilitate access, the organizers usually provide a shuttle service to the district.

Perched on the hills sloping down toward the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina, Sant'Angelo di Brolo is a Sicily village known for its hilly landscape, citrus groves, olive orchards, and the numerous district feasts that animate its summer. The Sausage Sandwich Festival represents one of the many occasions where the town's districts transform into festive squares, preserving religious and gastronomic traditions handed down from generation to generation.

When it takes place

The festival is held during the Ferragosto period: in 2025, the feast took place on August 16th and 17th, with the festival on Sunday, August 17th, starting at 8:30 PM. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced by the organizers: it is recommended to check the channels of the Municipality of Sant'Angelo di Brolo for the updated program.
