The religious feast of Contrada Giardino, featuring a procession, brass band, and summer food festival in the Nebrodi mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Maria Santissima del Giardino Festival is one of the most cherished events of the summer in Sant'Angelo di Brolo, a small town of just over 2,600 inhabitants perched in the Nebrodi mountains, in the province of Messina (Sicily). It takes place in Contrada Giardino, one of the many hamlets and districts that make up the municipality, and is part of the dense calendar of local and patronal feasts that animate the entire village throughout August, district by district.
The festival is both religious and popular: it stems from the devotion of the district's inhabitants to the Madonna del Giardino and is passed down from generation to generation, with the Festival Committee overseeing the organization each year. The day follows the classic pattern of Sicilian village feasts: the awakening with mortar fire and the brass band parading through the streets, the solemn mass in honor of the Virgin, and, in the late afternoon, the procession of the statue accompanied by the faithful and the notes of the band.
Alongside the devotional aspect, the festival has a convivial soul that makes it an eagerly awaited event for the entire community and neighboring towns. In the evening, Contrada Giardino hosts the grilled pork chop festival, a staple of the local culinary tradition, accompanied by live music and performances in the square that continue late into the night. Sant'Angelo di Brolo is, after all, a land of cured meats: the renowned Salame Sant'Angelo PGI is produced here, and the culture of grilled pork is an integral part of the village's identity.
Attending the Maria SS del Giardino Festival is also an opportunity to discover Sant'Angelo di Brolo, a gem of the Nebrodi that preserves the Norman-founded Benedictine monastery of San Michele Arcangelo and numerous Baroque churches. Neighborhood festivals like this tell the story of the most authentic Sicily, made of community, faith, and conviviality, far from the major tourist circuits.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the festival is traditionally held in the second half of August.
Contrada Giardino in Sant'Angelo di Brolo is preparing to renew its festival in honor of Maria Santissima del Giardino in 2026. The program usually follows that of previous editions: the day opens with mortar fire and a brass band concert, followed by a solemn mass, a procession of the statue in the afternoon, and, in the evening, the food festival with live music in the square.
The dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced by the Festival Committee in the weeks leading up to the event, typically through the village's social media channels.
Sant'Angelo di Brolo can be reached by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Brolo-Capo d'Orlando exit and continuing inland into the Nebrodi mountains. The nearest train station is in Brolo, on the Tyrrhenian line, from where you can continue by car or bus.
The festival is held in Contrada Giardino, within the municipality of Sant'Angelo di Brolo (ME).
Participation in religious services and performances is free. The pork chop festival requires payment for food at the stalls.
